Zynga and Other Game Devs Abandon MySpace

There's just no love for MySpace from anyone these days, including the developers who had games on the site.

Remember when MySpace <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93446-MySpace-Planning-Shift-to-Gaming-Portal>thought it could be a social gaming hub? And then, after its revamp was finished, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106954-MySpace-Fires-500-People-By-Soulless-Xerox>about half its workers were fired via Xerox? Well, now the site's public death by inches is continuing, and this latest development is particularly embarrassing: Casual game developers are shutting their MySpace portals.

The latest public coffin nail came about yesterday with Zynga's discontinuation of Mafia Wars on MySpace. According to Edge:

In a post on the game's MySpace page, Zynga confirms that Mafia Wars was discontinued yesterday, April 18. Instead it points players towards the game's official site, mafiawars.com, where the game continues, with the developer promising an improved experience with new locations.

Zynga last month discontinued another MySpace game, RPG Street Racing. However it also cancelled the game on Facebook, where Zynga is the runaway market leader, with 266 million monthly active users across all its games, 200 million ahead of its nearest competitor.

Of course, Zynga isn't the only company to abandon the sinking ship that is MySpace. Playdom recently announced that its RPGs Overdrive and Bloodlines were going away, and RockYou pulled all of its games (RockYou Pets, Superhug!, Speed Racing, and Truth Box) from the site.

The writing seems to be sitting pretty clearly on the wall these days: Between its dwindling user base, developers leaving the site for more fertile digital pastures, and NewsCorp continuing to look for a buyer to take this money pit off its hands, it seems like MySpace's days are pretty numbered.

What he said. I seriously thought that it was closed down years ago after it tried to remake itself into a music site..

And wasn't it owned by yahoo?

Damn, That sucks for MySpace.

Makes me wonder in the future if there will be a great Social medium that will break out and over-shadow Facebook.

I guess I should finally getting around to deleting my account as well. I haven't used it in a couple of years.

I wonder why Myspace never kept up it's popularity. I figured more people liked the customization it offered. I guess not.

It's really quite sad to see Myspace falling so dramatically from power. It used to be pretty much the best way of finding great new bands but... well, you can see what's happened to it. I hadn't logged in for a while and was quite content to just let it be, but then I had to log in for some reason after the revamp and found the whole thing such a complete mess that I deleted my profile there and then. Apparently I was far from alone in that.

Am I the only one seeing this and thinking it makes myspace look Better?

Hell that was one of the biggest driving factors of why people ditched it... getting constantly spammed by add on games.

I mean really there is no hope for it at this point unless something dramatically changes with it, but at least it seems like a nicer place now without all that fluff crap.

The only good thing on MySpace is indie bands from Cardiff. Hopefully they'll survive.

I guess Myspace will be joining the has-been club soon.

Say hello to your friends ICQ, Netscape and Copernic :)

The phrase "world's tiniest violin" is flashing through my head right now.

On the other hand, I'm always glad to see Zynga and News Corp. lose money.
