Chrono Trigger Heads Toward PSN

Chrono Trigger, the acclaimed Super Nintendo RPG that follows a group of unlikely heroes traveling through time, is slated to come to Playstation Network this year.

Sony and publisher Square Enix have yet to announce the title's release, but a recent ESRB rating [http://www.esrb.org/ratings/latestratings.jsp] makes a PSN release more than likely. The organization has given random ratings to games in the past but it doesn't exactly rate random, old games. What isn't clear at the moment is which version of Chrono Trigger PS3 and PSP owners will be able to download and play later this year.

The original 1994 SNES release goes for as high as $3,999 on eBay, but the non-filthy-rich consumer can play the game on the original Playstation as part of Final Fantasy Chronicles. The 2001 compilation, which came packaged with Final Fantasy IV, added gorgeous animated scenes (yay) and long load times (no!) Another alternative, and perhaps the best one, is the Nintendo DS port from 2008, where players can find new dungeons and a helpful map screen added by developer Square Enix. Japanese mobile phones and Wii's Virtual Console will also receive ports next month.

The Virtual Console version will be a straight port of the SNES original, and it's safe to assume that PSN's offering will be taken from Final Fantasy Chronicles. ESRB's recent rating (T) also lines up with this theory, so don't be upset when you don't see a new improved Chrono Trigger in the PsOne Classics section of the PSN store.

As for the mobile phone version? That's anyone's guess, at the moment.

This was my first ever RPG but I haven't played it since I was like 6 years old or something. But of course it's such an acclaimed game that I'm totally gonna have to buy it for my PSP now.

OMFG.
Do people really pay that much?
I'm glad I held onto that stuff. I think I even still have the original box & directions for it.

It's good to see this hit the digital though: there can be a whole new generation of young guys dreaming of being in a Lucca Ayla sandwich.

My question is that if Chrono Trigger is going to the PSN, will, if it hasn't already, Chrono Cross follow at some point?

Ah! Virtual console release too. Yay!

This is the best Snes RPG I know of, and I've had little luck over the years finding a legitimate way of playing it that wouldn't bankrupt me in the process.

(And always seem to miss my chance with things like the DS release. - Not that I ever owned a DS, which makes it even worse)

Now if only I could say the same about the games that have had fan translations, but no official english release.
(OK, so tales of fantasia had a GBA release in english, yet for reasons I don't understand in the slightest, a lot of graphical effects, as well as the music, are a lot worse than in the orignal)

Secret of Mana 3 is also something that'd be great to see. But again, no official english translation exists.

At least Chrono Trigger had an actual English release at some point. Which makes this a bit better.

I was beginning to wonder if this would happen when I saw Final Fantasy 3/6 on the virtual console...

(What with all the remakes and re-releases on handhelds and such.)

Not getting it unless it's re-optimized.

the PS1 version had TERRIBAD loading issues.

Like, a 10 second pause when you accessed the fucking menu. Which was frequently.

I hope for a PS3 owners that they use the SNES version, or that they fix the loading problems.

Glad to hear the classic version is coming to the VC!

I like Chrono Trigger quite alot, but I'm confused about something.

You're releasing it to PSN, when lots of people who ever had it or played it has it on {A} their old Snes machines, {B} Playstation, {C} DS, or {D} their computer.

Why are you releasing it again?

I still have my SNES version. In fact I just replaced the BRAM battery, so it's good as new!
I love that game to death, but holy shit, I didn't know I could make 4 grand off it!
hmmm

Same question applies to a lot of the PSN, XBLA, Wii Virtual Console re-issues. They still sell :)

I will quote Tom Baker in reply to this.

"It's an economic miracle. Of course it's wrong."

We're basically saying that releasing a game like this for a good time of years is a well with no bottom. This can't be right. Like I said, you can get it anywhere. The re-release of Chrono Trigger with FF4 was good because {A} it had extras put into it and {B} it came with another nostalgia game. Even if you didn't like FF4 (and it's kind of meh to me), it's still a bargain.

When I started hearing about it being on the DS, I kind of understood, because it was a reboot on a game medium that wasn't Playstation...but really, no. Once you understand that people probably could port it like crazy to their computers, you have to wonder why there would still be a market for it, years after the fact. Basically...no one will pay money for some games after a certain point.

At some point, it has to hit bottom. And if it doesn't, then something is wrong with the system here.

Seconded. I love Chrono Trigger and I will most definitely be getting it but Chrono Cross is quite possibly my favorite game ever.

If this is just the PS1 version without the load times fixed, it'll be a day one ignore for me. I could just as easily wait for the VC version, or get the already-available DS version.

P.S. Thanks

Having played and beaten all three iterations of this wonderful game, I have to say that the DS version is the weakest. The new dungeons add nothing, no real challenge, the questgiver village is extremely annoying and doesn't help you beat the game any easier than before, and the battle arena thing is even more irritating and useless than the new dungeons and village combined.

In short, I really hope this isn't the DS one again.

With ports to PSN, mobile phones and Virtual Console, I'm hoping the franchise will get revived in some new form soon. Seems like every fan favorite is getting sequels these days, but, then again, after those lackluster Final Fantasy IV expansions and past disasters (Dirge of Cerebus) I have to wonder if that would be a good thing.

Well it's not like you have to do the extra quest so it doesn't really take away much. Plus the dialogue was fantastic on the DS so hopefully they will use that version.
