Tetris: The First Virtual Sport?

Tetris might still be one of the most popular games in the world, but can it become the first virtual sport? Alexey Pajitnov and Henk Rogers, the people behind the game, certainly hope so.

Not content with having singlehandedly stalled the progress of Western civilization by creating one of the all-time greatest office productivity killers ever known to man, Alexey Pajitnov doesn't just want Tetris to be a game. He wants it to be a sport. He and Henk Rogers founded the Tetris Foundation in 1991 to keep the spirit of Tetris alive, and doing that doesn't just mean building new versions of the game, but taking it to a whole other level.

"We are going to turn Tetris into the first real virtual sport," Rogers said. "Sports like baseball and football were created at a time when our future was a lifetime of physical activities and physical fitness. But now that's not as important, it's more about mental fitness today."

Dubious assertion that physical fitness is no longer as important as it used to be aside, Rogers' point is that Tetris is an activity that "exercises the mind. That is the definition of a virtual sport."

And while plenty of people already play Tetris these days, Rogers envisions a world where gaming's not just a hobby, but a commonplace, everyday activity for a huge number of people. "The future is a country that has 48 million people living in it and the biggest casual gaming site in the country has 24 million registered users," he said. "That country is Korea. That's what's going to happen in the rest of the world."

I wouldn't mind that. If Tetris becomes the first virtual sport, then I'll be the first virtual Michael Jordan. Yeah, I'm that good.

I'd probably be Steve Jobs, in terms of athletic ability.

I'm starting to think the News Team gets paid extra for Tetris news.
Admit it, the Russians have you on the payroll. :)

Still, this means I can be a professional athlete from the comfort of my own home.
I can manage that.

Does that mean that everyone who plays a hero game is a "virtual hero"?
If so then it really doesnt mean that much.

There are already so-called "e-sports" in South Korea, commonly broadcast on TV. Most famous example being Starcraft.

We also slip Soviet propaganda into every post. You can't see it, but it's there, seeping into your mind, bit by bit.

Is it a team sport? If so, The Escapist needs to start up a team. It would be the best Tetris team in the history of everything.

Tetrinet [http://www.tetrinet.us/] has some interesting more then 2 person multiplayer.

Then there's people like this guy:

I'd have to agree that Starcraft might win for a video game being considered a proper competitive sport though.

I play most of my Tetris competitively these days on Tetris Friends - which is officially endorsed by Pajitnov and gang, I think. They have all sorts of games - versus 2P to 6P, sprint mode, marathon, and you win virtual tokens to spend on useless stuff. It's fun, but they haven't really implemented the "Friends" part yet, and the competition, I have to say, is a little bit lacking.

I'd be very excited to see Tetris go competitive. I'd be rusty right now because I lost my copy of Tetris DS and it's never in stores anymore, but when I get to playing it... I could certainly pay the bills on Tetris Competition earnings. Maybe not the Michael Jordan of Tetris, but certainly enough that I wouldn't need to deliver pizzas anymore.
