Sony's Station.com Taken Offline

Station.com [http://www.station.com], Sony Online Entertainment's portal to games including Everquest, Star Wars Galaxies and DC Universe Online, has been taken offline.

It's not clear at this point what exactly is going on but visitors to Sony's Station.com are currently being greeted with a rather ominous-sounding message. "We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily," it says. "In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday)."

What makes this a little more noteworthy than the usual "down for routine maintenance" message is, obviously, Sony's ongoing issues [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109693-Sony-Offers-Sincerest-Apologies-for-PSN-Attack] with the PlayStation Network, which has been offline for nearly two weeks. Whether there's actually a connection between the two outages beyond stumbling over one problem while investigating another isn't yet known but it's certainly not an unreasonable assumption.

Alas, Sony's "While you wait..." offer to check out a Free Realms trailer or listen to the latest SOE Podcast don't actually offer much of value while we wait because, well, Station.com is down. We'll keep you posted!

It probably has something to do with the "phasing back PSN" thing. Since DCUO and Free Realms are on PS3, too.

But that offical statement doesn't really fit that idea, does it? It could be that SOE had info stolen, too.

My first thoughts too. They may be taking it down in order to up the security along with that of everything else.

This doesn't sound like the phasing back at all, if it was just a technical maintenance thing (such as having to take it down before relaunching it with new security) they wouldn't use words like "concern", "issue" and "immediately"

If I had to guess, I would say they just discovered that more data was stolen then they previously thought.

Then why would they say "Discovered an issue"? If it was just rephasing maintenance they wouldn't say they found an issue in their investigation.

Could someone do some digging on this? I need to know if I should cancel my card, I had a Star Wars Galaxies account a while ago. I really wouldn't have the first clue about finding out if SOE has been breached...

PSN is having troubles.

Got it.

Now, can we please stop sending me into a panic attack by updating every time something Sony related goes on the fritz?

I'm cheap enough to actually be dismayed at the idea of paying Xbox Live.

Yes, dismayed.

That's not an exaggeration.

Huh, I would have thought that already was down. Shouldn't that be affected by PSN?

I think it may be to implement the new security into the MMO servers maybe? That's just a guess though.

Sony just can't catch a break, eh?

I hope that after this, the hackers will focus on the WBC instead.

And just when you thought sony couldnt get any more screwed this happens.

I was pissed at sony back when I migrated from PS2 to 360. I always hoped there shitty attitude would catch up with them, but even this level of incompetence is crazy. That said even I think this is becoming a bit much even for them.

So much for phasing things back online. Guess they're phasing other things offline. Wonder what happens tomorrow!

Im pretty damn sure that those terms and conditions you agree too when signing up have "Thou shalt not sue us" somewhere in there.
If it's not there already, it will be in the new update they give us that makes us change our password. It'll probably be the only way to change our passwords as well. And if so, they can keep the stupid account.

Yes you should cancel it. Better safe than sorry, and it's got to be easier to just get it canceled because it might have been compromised than have to deal with getting the charges canceled if it actually is.
