Sony Denies May 31 Deadline For PSN Return

Despite earlier reports claiming the PlayStation Network would be up and running by May 31, Sony has publicly denied the existence of any such deadline.

Earlier today, a Bloomberg report [http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-05-09/sony-s-playstation-qriocity-services-remain-shut-uncertain-on-restart.html] quoted Sony spokesman Shigenori Yoshida as saying that though the company is "uncertain when it can resume ... services," the plan is to have the firm's flagship online service up and running no later than May 31.

Since that time Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold has asserted that there is no such deadline in place and that no new information exists on when the PSN will be able to resume service.

For those keeping score at home the PSN has been offline for nearly three weeks since the April 20 attack [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109568-Sony-Admits-Private-PSN-Info-Has-Been-Stolen-All-Of-It] in which hackers broke into Sony's PlayStation Network/Qriocity system, compromising reams of valuable user information and forcing the electronics giant to pull down its entire online gaming infrastructure in the name of security upgrades.

Sony has recently stepped up its efforts [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109871-Third-Sony-Attack-Thwarted-Sony-May-Offer-Cash-Rewards-for-Info] to patch holes in its network, but given the historical persistence of the hacker community and its seeming blood oath to do as much damage to Sony as possible, the firm's refusal to commit to a deadline on the PSN's resurrection comes as no surprise.

Still, one hopes the company has some sort of plan in place. The longer this outage rolls on, the more Sony loses face with an increasingly impatient playerbase. Are any of you still anxiously clutching a plush Crash Bandicoot and ticking off the days until you can once again browse the PSN store?

About time. It went down April 17th, right? I can finally buy SPYRO on the PSN. Damned hackers. First time in four years that I want to use PSN and it's down.

Well its getting harder and harder to resist the urge to just get an Xbox. But I know if I did that all I'd do is miss the Playstation. So i'm holding off on that just yet! But seriously sony. Get your shit together....

This is pretty much the only time I've ever wanted to use PSN, to get my copy of Portal 2 on steam. So yeah, not happy with this frankly ridiculous constant outage, and the complete inability to play the co-op.

They must be about done by now, their stock is plummeting, conusmer image is at an all time low and gamers are increasingly irate at a service that has not only been suspended but taken wealths of personal information and given it to who knows who.

Some good news wouldn't go amiss for Sony atm.

Honestly? you go from not enough news to too much bad news. This whole situation could have been downplayed if handled properly, but lets face it, Sony aren't the best at hiring decent PR people.

I was actually planning on buying a PS3 sometime soon, but I won't be now. If the hackers' intentions were to turn consumer interest away from Sony, they've succeeded in turning me away. I don't want anything to do with Sony after this debacle.

Does anyone know if any AAA releases have been delayed to coincide with PSN's return? I would imagine that a game heavily reliant on online play would prefer to wait for PSN to be available before it launched.

This just in, Sony's CEO exploded, just....exploded.

And the entire city that Sony HQ is in just disappeared, it's just gone. Big crater.

Seriously, could the news get any worse?

I hope someone related to Sony reads this.
They should, because this is an incredibly good forum/newssite about anything and everything gaming.

Are you reading this? Great!
Give us Final Fanatasy VII for free and I consider this whole thing a fluke.
Please, I just want to immerse myself in the days of 1997 when I played your opus on my PC with Voodoo II 12 MB GFX card and was still a happy youth!!!!

In turn I will forget about the past month and not badmouth your security to anyone <3

It's not like sony is giving us this crap, PSN would still be online if it weren't for the Hackers. Those motherf***ing piece of s**t hackers who cant just leave the rest of us alone. But yeah, thanks for the misplaced sympathy anyways.

People act like this is all Sony's fault like they walked up to anonymous and were like, "Dude you know what would be hilarious? If YOU hacked us this time!" (and don't argue that it wasn't anon because deep down you know it was, they are an anarchy, they have no higher order to answer to, they'll do whatever they want- including stealing credit card info.)

Sony you have my full support, hope you get PSN store back online by next tuesday though- I WANT HONEST HEARTS!
