Government Questions Block PSN Restoration in Japan

The Japanese government won't let Sony turn PSN back on in Japan until it's sure Sony has made it properly secure.

While PSN sputters back to life in other parts of the world, in Sony's home turf of Japan, it will remain offline, at least for the time being. The Japanese government says it needs more information from Sony before it will give the go-ahead to restore the service.

Kazushige Nobutani, Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, said his government had met with Sony on the 6th and 13th of May, but that the company had yet to properly answer questions about two key area. The first, Nobutani said, was the preventative measures that Sony outlined in its May 1st press conference [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109693-Sony-Offers-Sincerest-Apologies-for-PSN-Attack ]. Nobutani said that Sony needed to assure the Japanese government that it was doing everything that it said it would to prevent another breach. The second area was that of customer confidence. Nobutani said that other Japanese companies have had to make amends for lost data in the past, and it wanted to make sure that Sony's plans measured up to the precedent.

While it seems strange that Sony hasn't been able to get things back up and running in its own backyard, the PSN restoration is staggered, so it isn't as if Japan is the only place still waiting to get back online. Sony will almost certainly want to deal with this situation quickly however, as it has an awful lot of customers in Japan.

You know, I think that more governments should have done this to be perfectly honest. Allow the governments to take a look so this way if it happens again at least Sony can come back and say

"Hey you inspected our security measures and said they were good enough, lets not try to charge us tons of money this time."

So, this is more like "breaking news: Japanese government dopes something other than fold to foreign pressure" huh? I can't say I don't like it though, I wonder what kind of amends my JP psn is getting :D.

He's the entire ministry of Economy, trade and Industry? Poor bastard must never sleep.

OT: If they're actually inspecting it, hooray, it could also just be the government putting pressure on them to push forward another goal then, political wank.

Preventative's a word now? I think it's Preventive... o_O

Anyhow, at least the government there is doing their job on ensuring the security of their citizens.

No, it's Preventative. Preventive isn't a legitimate word.

And while we're on that topic, "Questions Blocks"?

I severely doubt anyone here in Japan is going to agree with you. When the government gets involved in ANYTHING here, it usually takes about 12 times as long to get the job done than the U.S. or the U.K. I've got my American PSN account, yet I'm stuck with a Japanese IP address, so until Uncle Samurai (see wut I did thar?) gets his head out of his rump, I won't be able to play any more Resistance with my girlfriend back home...

...Lame all around.
I just think it'd be something that would be in Sony's best interests to do.

No it is. It's just incredibly frustrating because Sony is never getting their hands on my credit card info again. Yay PSN cards. So I guess I'm just a tad miffed watching everyone go on and on about how awesome it is to be playing games again while I sit back with Nihon-jichan as he bangs his cane on Sony's door, demanding to be convinced all is well without ever really saying how.
I sold my PS3 a while back so I'm still pissed my info got swiped and pissed even more than their idea of compensation is completely and totally useless to me.

That would probably be because the Japanese government is more familiar than most about Sony's common practices of doing the absolute minimum of what is required. I'm glad they were smart enough to demand proof that they didn't just throw the power back on.

Stupid Japanese government just HAS to have their panties in a bunch, as usual.

Oh well, hopefully PSN will be fully operational soon.

I don't think Sony itself would turn PSN back on until it's sure it's properly secure.

But kudos to the Japanese government, I'm sure Sony customers would appreciate the extra measures taking in account of the PSN fiasco.
