Rehashed Bing Promotion Bribes Gamers With Microsoft Points

Like millions of divorced parents around the world, Microsoft wants to buy your love, and they're prepared to keep trying until they get it right.

A new promotion launched by Microsoft in support of its Bing search engine offers gamers 200 Microsoft Points just for joining the Bing Rewards program.

Now, before any of you puff up your angry neck frills and tap out an email complaining about how old this news is, let me reassure you: this is an entirely new promotion, which just happens to superficially resemble a poorly-received, earlier promotion.

Prior attempts to bribe users toward Bing drew a number of complaints. Apparently many gamers felt that being forced to use Internet Explorer and an intrusive Bing search bar wasn't worth the 200 points.

The new program however, ditches nearly all of its predecessors annoying caveats. The email I received this morning did require me to sign up for Microsoft's Bing Rewards program, but didn't seem to mind that I was doing so via Firefox on my MacBook Pro.

Of course, this wouldn't be reality if there wasn't at least one hitch; To claim the 200 points you have to remain a member of the Bing Rewards program for at least a month. On the upside, this also earns you 250 Bing Rewards credits (redeemable toward the standard rewards program fare), but on the downside, you're almost definitely giving Microsoft permission to drown your inbox in Bing promotional emails if they so choose.

So, is it worth it? That's up to you. I won't be leaving Google for anything less than a cartoonishly oversized bag of cash, but perhaps you don't feel the same search engine allegiance. Regardless, it's nice to see Microsoft learning from its mistakes.

LoL, I hate Bing.... shit... I don't particularly like Microsoft all the much either. The only good thing they have ever made was every other OS.

Yeah, I got this e-mail. Took the code to my Xbox LIVE Rewards page and put it in. Found out I have to sign up for bing rewards too. Okay, that's not too bad. I'll just sign up and never use it. No, wait. I have to be a member of Bing Rewards for a month AND I have to use Bing so they can collect information about my searches.

All tabs related to the promotion were then promptly closed. I don't want 200 MS Points that badly.

These words should never be muttered again.

And this promotion would be alright, if it wasn't just US and if you could actually buy anything substantial with 200 points.

Just one? At least 3 cartoonishly oversized bags of cash, with a promise for less spam.

Well, I actually prefer IE over Firefox, though I am starting to use Chrome alot more. But as for Bing searchbar, not a fucking chance. Sorry Mircrosoft (well, not really), Google or bust for me.

Maybe instead of dreaming up schemes to trick people into using your service, you can just make your service better until it grows by word of mouth. Google didn't become a name synonymous with internet searching because they gave away meaningless rewards.

At least now you won't get spammed by Bing!
Setting up a spam filter takes less then one minute ;p

I'd go for those 200 GP if it wasn't US only.

I don't have an XBox or XBox 360 so where can I use these points? I assume GFWL, and even if Microsoft was handing out real money instead of their MS points I wouldn't be willing to try Live any time soon.
