Lara Gets Serious in New Tomb Raider Teaser

Sadly, there aren't a whole lot of tombs to see in the new trailer, not unless you're a boat.

Lara Croft may very well once have been one of the most recognizable videogame characters around, but after lower than expected sales [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/88582-Eidos-Pondering-Makeover-for-Lara-Croft] for Tomb Raider Underworld, developer Crystal Dynamics has gone back to the drawing board and rebooted the series right back to the beginning. Gone is the older, more confident Lara, and in her place is a younger, less experienced version, who looks like she's in for a rough time if this teaser trailer is anything to go by.

If you've been keeping up with details [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105937-New-Tomb-Raider-Raider-Reboot-Details-Emerge] about the new Tomb Raider, then the plot of the teaser won't be too much of a surprise. The young Lara Croft embarks on her very first adventure, and it does not go well. Her ship is torn apart by a storm, leaving her stranded with very limited resources. According to the snippet of marketing blurb that accompanies the video, Lara is "armed with only the raw instincts and physical ability to push beyond the limits of human endurance," although by the end of the trailer she has apparently found a bow and an ice axe as well.

Obviously, you can't tell too much from the trailer, what with it lacking even a hint of gameplay footage, but as a statement of intent, it does a pretty decent job. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics are giving this marketing campaign a long tail though, as the game doesn't come out until Fall 2012.

Nice trailer, although it looks as if the 'Tomb Raider' title may become redundant.

I never really liked the old games, but this has caught my interest.

We shall see.

I'm expecting a good character development of Lara please, not just OH LOOK TITS AND ARSE!!!

It's a REALLY nice looking trailer, in fact I had to look twice just to check it wasn't actors, but because it was Square Enix the shock subsided since they're always making they're cinematics look like gold and skimping out on the gameplay features. Don't let me down this time Square Enix...otherwise I will not be a happy bunny ¬_¬

I like where they're trying to take this. They want to give the sex symbol that we know Lara to be a much more human look. She's not a supermodel in tight clothes swinging about for our pleasure (I'll leave Tecmo to deal with that). She's fighting to survive, which to players can make her a much better character to relate to.

Mysterious island of shipwrecks? Bermuda triangle maybe?

Looks interesting. But then again, so did the last few failures.

Matter of fact, the one which looked awful, guardian of light, turned out being awesome.

We'll see.

I quite liked this trailer. But my main problem with Lara Croft is that she's already rich, and sets out on what seems like a quest to wipe tigers from the face of the Earth for nothing more than more wealth and adventure. I just find her selfish.

Sorry, but do we need a gritty realistic reboot for the tomb raider series, seriously?

Yes yes yes, I get it, grim and gritty. No need to beat the poor girl up and linger on her anguish like a CGI slasher flick. Within the course of three minutes we see her getting beat up and bloodied so badly I half expected Max Payne to step up and offer her some painkillers. Doesn't help everything has to be all darkly lit and edgy, grrrrr, Lara Croft is super serious now, grrrr!

But I'm being unfair. I did like the throwback outfit she's wearing and it's a neat premise for a game actually. Still... gah, I'm just grumpy because I'm one of ten people who apparently liked the colourful style and lighthearted adventure of the original games. Guess this is what the new age requires, ah well. Would have preferred a more Uncharted style approach rather than going all gritty, but we'll see how it works out.

Hopefully it'll be good and my grumpiness will have been for naught.

Well, hopefully they wont go all "Other M" on this heroine, and really make a good game out of it.

Wait, when did she have the time to make a bow?
Where the hell is the time skip?
Besides that, the trailer made my heart skip a few beats

Why would you call this trailer a teaser? I know there's roomfot argumentation but 3 effin' minutes ain't no teaser man.
On the trailer itself: Quite decent but somewhat melodramatic.

You got a point. You can't call this and the crap hitman related thirty seconds video teasers, they're vavstly different. Here they put effort into rpoducing a cinematic instead of making the game, and in the hitman they just showed a damn snake and skull but they're focusing more on the gameplay.

Really like the new lara model. Yeh yeh, big tits and ass and all that, but at least now she doesnt look like your average porn star.

OT: Looks interesting. Maybe theres still hope for sqeenix. Consider me intrigued.
So big tits and ass isn't how your average pon star looks like?
