Take Our Console Quiz!

Prepare yourself for E3's hardware announcements by seeing how much you know about classic consoles in this week's quiz.

E3 is approaching, and with it comes the tradition of announcing new gaming hardware. Soon you'll be up-to-date on all the latest in consoles - as Dr. Carl Sagan said, however, "You have to know the past to understand the present," and that's what we're here for. So tell us, how much do you know about the history of gaming consoles?

Oh, and for those who claim that console games are simpler than their PC brethren, rest assured that this quiz is anything but. Good luck, and breathe easy - at least if you fail here, you won't be shoveled into a New Mexico landfill [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_video_game_burial].

As always, you'll have as long as you like to take the quiz, and can retake it until you get that 100%, but your cumulative time will affect your position on the leaderboard.

30%...meh that will do.

I don't know much about early consoles, PS1 onwards I'm all right with.

90% after fact-checking EVERY SINGLE ANSWER? Yeah. I call bollocks. One question isn't being counted. How do I know? I changed one specific answer four times without ever swapping the other answers and the score didn't change.

1/10, I would've had a better chance getting answers right just guessing.

I'm with the rest of the people in this though; I started on a PS1, so my one right answer was the "Which of these isn't a Sega console"? Most likely.

For never owning a console and only have lent a PS for colin mcrae and spyro I'm actually surprised I got 4/10. The only games I can play on consoles are car games, the rest don't interest me or I rather have it on my PC.

However I do find gaming history in general worth having a look at, both PC and console.

Fun quiz though.

40% for me, and the following isn't because I'm whinging about the score: why where most of the questions about the consoles of the 70's and 80's? A more balanced quiz would have had questions about the NES, Snes, N64, and so on.

Now the PC Gamers are gonna go "Where's the PC Quiz? Why does everyone prefer consoles when PCs a CLEARLY better? This site's being dumbed down for the console crowd!"

OT: 40%. And a lot of these questions were before my time... but now I'm fascinated. To Wikipedia!

Suitable questions about the consoles themselves would have been harder to come up with for that era. With the earlier stuff, there are more definitive firsts, innovations, and arguably more iconic games. I also felt that the earlier consoles allowed for better variation in question difficulty - with the SNES onwards, most questions would either be very easy or very hard, without much middle ground.[footnote]Because most people would either know the answer from pop culture/from having played it or the question would have been so obscure nobody could answer it.[/footnote] Plus, the more I researched early console stuff, the more I liked it: there was a lot of copyright confusion [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TET%D0%AFIS:_The_Soviet_Mind_Game], rapid company growth, market flooding [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_video_game_consoles_%28second_generation%29], crashes [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_crash_of_1983] - the works. Some of those early consoles and peripherals are really interesting, like the Vectrex [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vectrex], the Atari GameLine [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GameLine] and the Atari Mindlink [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_Mindlink].

But you're right, a more balanced quiz would have included those later systems. Had I been able to come up with some good questions for them, they probably would have been included - there's always another quiz, though!

Yeah, I was disappointed. They should have called it the retro console quiz.
