Australian Unveils Prototype Hoverbike

Assuming it's legit, Chris Malloy's hoverbike may be the raddest invention since those sneakers that light up.

First, it should be said that I'm not entirely convinced that this hoverbike isn't a hoax. I'm no aeronautics engineer so the concept of riding around on a couple of giant fans seems possible, but then again most of my concepts of reality are based on the films of the early 1990s.

It also doesn't help that Malloy is claiming some startling capabilities for his new machine. If he is to be believed, this hoverbike can hit speeds of 170 miles per hour and reach a maximum altitude of 10,000 feet.

Finally, a range of impressive photos [http://www.hover-bike.com/videos.html], and based on the pixels and my having seen a number of photoshops in the past, none seem to have been altered -- but again, I'm no expert.

Now, that said, if this machine is real, I'm incredibly impressed. Particularly with how affordable the thing might be if/when it becomes available to the public. From the official site:

We are not in the production phase yet, so we cannot give you a finalized price structure, but as a guide, when we can sell at least 100 units a year the cost with current material prices and labor will be $45,000AUD +/-$5000. As with all goods, economy of scale will bring the price down. At 1000 units a year the cost will be similar to a performance motorcycle!

As the site points out, here in the US the hoverbike would be classified as an "ultralight," meaning that prospective riders (pilots?) would not need a pilot's license.

If your mind is not rapidly filling with horrifying images of hoverbike crashes, congratulations, you live in a wonderful fantasy land.

Now, assuming we can forget about the possibility that this thing is fake, and that the first thing almost everyone would do on it is die horribly, I think we can all see how impressive this invention is. Next to incredibly attractive blonde women and Paul Hogan [http://www.amazon.com/Crocodile-Dundee-Los-Angeles/dp/B000QUEQ6S], this may be the greatest thing Australia has ever given the world.

It sure beats Vegemite.

Those better be some damned impressive fans if they're gonna make him hover.

WANT.

This isn't a low content post; this is all that needs to be said. If this is fake, I want the real thing.

There's video of it right on the main page proving the machine exists, whether it actually works like the picture is another story.

For my part I believe the machine exists and that the fans are powerful enough to lift the machine and rider into the air. I have my doubts about its stability and controlability through. Only two of the photos are of the machine hovering and in both its tethered down on four corners.

There are lots of ways to get into the air (re: helium weather balloons). Not so many that let you get up, go where you want to go in a timely fashion, and get back down safely.

I'd say it's plausible, but probably a very finicky way to transport yourself. If it actually works I'd totally want one although considering where I live I'd have some jealous asshole just run it over with his truck while I was in the store picking up groceries.

If it's true and if it works.

DO WANT! DO VERY MUCH WANT!

I can't really see what benefits it would have over a normal bike apart from somehow being both nerdier and cooler, but any and all complaints I could have over this could be counteracted by the fact that IT'S A FRICKIN' HOVERBIKE!!!

Looks like a ground effect vehicle. Basically, it's sort of like a helicopter, but the job is easier because you actually are pushing against the ground, to an extent. Seeing as they don't have any non-tethered images, I'm going to join castlewise in wondering how they plan to address the stability issues that I'd expect to crop up. I suppose it's possible that, with the blades wider than the rider, it's not quite as much of a problem.

Yep accurate points, except vegemite is awesome. Americans over react to it so much, and if you eat it out of the jar in front of them it is hilarious. In all seriousness vegemite is awesome.

As for hover bike, sounds dumb :p

Just looking at it... I have a hard time believing his claims. Get off the ground in a tethered test? Sure, that's plausible. Not even particularly difficult, really.

But actually fly the thing? Not unless there's a hell of a lot more to it that than we're seeing in those photos.

It might go up, sure.

Staying up for more than a few seconds, not to mention landing the thing? Hope their test pilot has excellent health insurance. And life insurance.

Ya, it could exist in a working form. But 10,000 feet? 140 mph? I'm calling bullshit on that until otherwise proven that this machine works to those claims.

The optimist in me says: "DO WANT!"
The skeptic in me says: "DO WANT! blah blah something about video - DO WANT!!!"

Nice design.

Anyway, assuming this is real and it really does work, I still don't want one. Can you guess what happens when a big bug or a bird hits one of those fans? Yeah, no thanks, my feet are staying firmly on the ground.

Scientists still need to create hologram advertisements and automatic lacing shoes before I'm impressed (-_-)

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I suppose its plausible but until I see some good evidence for it Im going with fake, I dont see how a line of fans like that could really be stable anyway
