Game of Thrones Nominated for Best Drama Emmy

The acclaimed fantasy series gets even more acclaim with 13 nods for excellence in writing, acting and production.

Make no bones about it, The Escapist Magazine loves HBO's Game of Thrones series [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/tag/game+of+thrones]. From the opening title sequence to the excellent acting and gorgeous vistas, writers and producers David Benihoff and Dan Weiss adapted George R. R. Martin's fantasy epic into a ten episode series about as well as they possibly could. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences thought so too, rewarding Game of Thrones with 13 nominations across a broad spectrum of categories, including Best Drama Series. While Sean Bean and other standouts in the cast failed to receive recognition for their performance, I was really happy to see that Peter Dinklage was nominated for his portrayal of the Imp, Tyrion Lannister.

On top of the deserved writing and directing nods, the production also received many nominations for technical excellence, such as costumes, makeup and hairstyling. I love that Emmy nominations for these categories mention a specific episode, meaning you can usually tell which scene impressed the voters. For instance, Paul Engelen and Conor O'Sullivan were nominated for Prosthetic Makeup in "A Golden Crown" [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/gameofthrones/8893-Game-of-Thrones-Recap-Episode-6-A-Golden-Crown], which I assume was considered for the awful conclusion for one character who was not the dragon, apparently.

Here's the full list of nominations for Game of Thrones:

Best Drama Series: Game of Thrones
Supporting Actor in a Drama Series: Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister
Writing in a Drama Series: David Benioff and Dan Weiss for "Baelor"
Directing in a Drama Series: Timothy van Patten for "Winter is Coming"
Casting in a Drama Series: Nina Gold and Robert Sterne
Costumes for a Drama Series: Michelle Clapton and Rachael Webb-Crozier for "The Pointy End"
Hairstyling in a Single-Camera Series: Kevin Alexander and Candice Banks for "A Golden Crown"
Main Title Design: Angus Wall, Robert Feng, Kirk H. Shintani, and Hameed Shaukat
Non-prosthetic Makeup in a Single-Camera Series: Paul Engelen and Melissa Lackersteen for "Winter is Coming"
Prosethtic Makeup in a Series: Paul Engelen and Conor O'Sullivan for "A Golden Crown"
Sound Editing for a Series: Stefan Hendrix, Tim Hands, Michelle McCormack, Steve Fanagan, Andy Kennedy, Jon Stevenson, Robin Whittaker, Caoimhe Doyle, and Eoghan McDonnell
Special Visual effects for a Series: Adam McInnes, Angela Barson, Lucy Ainsworth-Taylor, Raf Morant, Henry Badgett, Damien Mace, Stuart Brisdon, and Graham Hills
Stunt Coordination: Paul Jennings

The Emmys award ceremony will be broadcast live on September 10th, so we have a months to ponder whether Game of Thrones will beat out it's brethren on HBO like Boardwalk Empire or Mildred Pierce for Best Drama.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Baelor written by GRRM himself?

Edit: Nvm, that was The Pointy End. My bad.

If Peter Dinklage doesn't win best supporting actor, then what little faith I still have in the Academy will be gone. That man stole every scene he was in.

This is awesome; I love this show! I hope it wins in every category.

I wonder who the other competition is for "Main Title Design", because this is one of the best I've seen. Also, I wonder if that includes the title theme song itself? That definitely deserves recognition.

I hope that Anne Mccaffrey's Dragon Riders of Pern won't be realized in such a boring way like Game of Thrones, which can lull to sleep in 10-15 minutes.

Solid series, deserving of nominations, although I reckon Mildred Pierce would be a more deserving winner of the top gong.

Dinklage for Supporting Actor, mind.

The book is just like the TV-series. It's as much about political drama as it is about sword-clashing action. Another hack'n'slash is certainly not what the medium needed. GoT is just perfect the way it is.

In other news, Scientists declare that the sun is hot.
It was kind of obvious that this would happen.
I have heard great things about this show but due to a complete disinterest in TV as of late, I haven't watched it. I also heard the True Blood is great but after one episode I couldn't take it.

I saw on the Today show that GoT was nominated for best drama but they never mentioned Peter Dinklage being nominated. It makes me happy.

Tyrion Lannister may very well be one of my favorite tv characters of all time thanks in large part to Peter Dinklage.

I hope he wins

Say it isn't so. What about all that land I bought there for my retirement?!?

Anyway, not at all suprising, especially Peter Dinklage. The one of these nominations that I like is the one for Main Title Design. I love the opening to the show the way the castles or the Wall come up and especially when it changes to show a new place. It is a great way to let the viewer know the scope of the world and where the characters will be at.
Best of luck to the cast and crew.

I can't believe Sean Bean isn't nominated. He nailed that role. But Peter Dinklage is awesome and he deserves an Emmy for his portrayal of Tyrion. He's my favorite character.

Agreed. The titles should win because it's better than any other show, hands down.

At least they're taking genre stuff somewhat seriously now. I can still remember when stuff like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Battlestar Galactica were still being brushed off.

Well, it's great that the show has picked up 13 nominations. But I think the academy's prejudices against SciFi and Fantasy are still showing. Where is the nomination for Sean Bean? Emilia Clarke? Harry Lloyd? Mark Addy?

Ah well, perhaps the People's Choice Awards will vindicate them. That's really the only one I really care for anyway.

The books: read them. This isn't some action packed blockbuster full of big battle scenes and stupid characters.

I can't wait to see freakin' Blackwater next season...ol' GRRM wrote it himself.

GODS! Who the hell put ads in the captchas?! >.<

"Baelor" better win that Emmy! That was the most perfect hour of television I have ever seen! I'm still both visualising and in shock about that ending.
