It's Another Soft Summer for Videogame Retail

Videogame hardware and software sales in the U.S. declined ten percent in June over the same period in last year, although as usual those numbers don't include the digital market.

A billion dollars in sales is nothing to sneeze at but it's still a step down from the same period last year and the second month in a row in which the industry saw its sales decline. The NPD Group reported that total retail sales across hardware, software and accessories added up to $1.03 billion, down ten percent year-over-year. Hardware sales were down nine percent to $366.6 million, while software sales, including PC games, hit $508.9 million, a drop of ten percent. Somewhat surprisingly, PC software sales for the month actually brightened the picture a bit; console-only game sales were $469.9 million, a 12 percent slide. Game accessory sales were down 11 percent to $158.9 million.

Industry analyst Doug Creutz said he expected June to be a rough month but added that some big-name releases, like Infamous 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Duke-Nukem-Forever-Pc/dp/B002I0JAJ2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1310744028&sr=8-3] came in at third.

Despite the slump, things continue to look rosy for the Xbox 360, which continued its dominance of the U.S. market. "Xbox 360 maintains its lead in the U.S. console market, selling more units in the U.S. than any other console for 12 of the past 13 months," the NPD said. "Even while console and software sales across the industry have slowed, as often happens in the summer, Xbox 360 continues growing, staying on track to have the biggest year in Xbox history in the sixth year of its lifecycle."

The month's top-ten games list is as follows:

01 L.A. Noire (PS3, Xbox 360)
02 Duke Nukem Forever (360, PS3, PC)
03 Infamous 2 (PS3)
04 Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game (Wii, 360, NDS, 3DS, PS3, PSP, PC)
05 Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (3DS)
06 Call of Duty: Black Ops (360, PS3m Wii, NDS, PC)
07 NBA 2K11 (360, PS3,Wii, PS2, PSP, PC)
08 Mortal Kombat 2011 (PS3, 360)
09 Cars 2 (NDS, Wii, 360, PS3, PC)
10 Just Dance 2 (Wii)

Maybe if they... I don't know... released some games there would be more sales. Seriously, why is the summer so boring when it comes to gaming? Are the developers afraid of something?

I'm really happy to see OoT in the top five. Probably gonna be the only time we see a 3DS game on this list.

My guess would be is that they are all working for the holiday release and making DLC for Christmas instead of just releasing all throughout the year.

I know the US go for the 360 more than any other country, but I'm impressed, the 360 is really thriving right now

Ehhh... The only game I really cared for this summer was Child of Eden, but it's pretty niche and even then I gotta wait until September for it to come out on PS3.

Well, theres your problem. You're not including digital downloads.

I can guarentee if they did, they would see an increase in sales just from the Steam sale that ran from late June to July 10th. Those digital sales were selling HUGE ammounts of product.

Not to mention that the last year theres been a shift towards digital content. Look how many games are available to download on the 360 marketplace: its considerably more than last year, where it was mostly original xbox titles.

Agreed. This is when everything awesome comes. November is going to be sweeeeeeet.

But excluding the Steam sales, I haven't bought, and don't intend on buying, anything this summer.

It's a cynical pleasure, I know, but I'mg glad that it was a slow June. I don't like any of the "top 10" games and there was no major release that I felt I need to shell out $49.99 for.

Duke is #2? Haven't I been reading about really lousy sales for DNF all this time?

*shrugs*

You do realise that most sales charts don't include digital sales because digital distributors are notoriously reluctant to release their sales figures, right?

I think Valve hides those Steam sales numbers so they can keep the huge PC gaming market to themselves.

Only thing keeping some much larger move to digital distribution at the moment is that a large percentage of people's ISPs in America are horrible.
