Final Fantasy Tactics Hits iOS This Thursday

Final Fantasy Tactics is coming to an Apple gadget near you, soon and for a relatively small amount of cash.

Because using the actual Internet is so 2008, Square Enix recently took to Facebook to unveil release details for its latest iteration of Final Fantasy Tactics. To wit:

Hi, everybody!
Finally I can tell you the details.

FINAL FANTASY TACTICS: The War of the Lions
Release date: August 4th, 2011
Price: 1800JPY/ 15.99USD/ 12.99EURO

It's not a universal app and
the iPad version will be released this autumn.
(at least 1 month behind)

Likewise, the company has released a bit of media from the game, at least in Japan. That video embedded above comes courtesy of Famitsu, where you can also find a handful of screens and a ton of Japanese text [http://www.famitsu.com/news/201108/01047716.html].

As you may have guessed from that subtitle quoted above, this iOS port is an upgraded version of the PSP's Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions. That game, released in 2007, was an updated remake of the original PlayStation's Final Fantasy Tactics. Improved graphics, redone cutscenes, additional character options; the PSP game had it all.

This iOS version however, takes that concept one step further by adding a convenient autosave system and smoothing out some of the game's slowdown issues.

Great, right? And being able to tote around one of the greatest strategy RPGs ever made within that Apple device you always have in your pocket anyway is a pretty cool idea, no? If nothing else, it's a more entertaining diversion than endless hours of Angry Birds, isn't it?

Still, that $16 price tag is a bit ... presumptuous, isn't it? Compared to other Final Fantasy games, and even their remakes, it's a steal, but in the world of iOS games, it comes off as a bit steep. I have no doubt that Square Enix will sell eff-loads of this game to their devoted cabal of fans, but dropping that price by only $6 would make the game infinitely more attractive to iOS gamers curious about the series.

Or Square Enix could release a Sephiroth DLC pack for $2 a pop and make a bazillion dollars on the elated tears of nostalgic fans. Either way.

Eh. I'll get it, and enjoy it, but I'd still rather anything made by Intelligent Systems. Like the Paper Mario re-skin coming soon :D
Or the 3DS Fire Emblem they won't talk about :D

But this will tide me over until then.

It's a huge game, still cheaper than a physical PS1 copy or in this case PSP. If it controls well damn it this is a must buy for me.

When it comes to iOS games my price range is really different to other mediums. £12 is far too steep for an iOS game. I won't pay any more than a fiver. I don't even understand it myself, but them's the breaks. I mean Phoenix Wright is only £2.99, and that's a great game.

Thank you Square Enix. Now that your done porting, what is argueably a great game, to another platform. Could you please finish Final Fantasy XIII Versus. Ideally before finishing Final Fantasy XIII-2.
You know, since you rat-bastards have been dicking around with it longer than XIII.

*incomprehensible grouching and grumbling*

That was two years ago.

I actually started a new save on my PS version about 3 weeks ago, already had put in about 20 hours before Bastion came out.

Had also bought it on Psp a fair while back but have since lost my save and can't be bothered to find my PSP.

Shame my Iphone's battery life is absolute garbage.

Too bad they didn't fix the slowdown in the PSP version before creating a whole new port and fixing the slowdown in that port.

Haha I looove how people try to defend how low the iPhone price point is. Despite how it kills developers because you are assumed to either make your app $1 or free to do well. I will buy this game just out of spite for everyone who pay $60 for a piece of crap for the Xbox360, but bawk at a $15 iPhone game.

The first thing I was thinking.

Droid version....please? Pretty please? No, seriously, this is the only game that made me want a PSP....albeit not enough.

Come on Square, bring this ***** to Droid and I will end my embargo on you, and I just might even buy Deus Ex: HR new, instead of used! Maybe.

EDIT- just watched that video.....dat camera movement. Please square, think of the droid users! We have money to throw at this, too.

Will it be as bad as the PSP version where it had video/audio lag during EVERY action?

I get the impression that it's not an iPhone app. Maybe it's that part that says: "It's not a universal app and the iPad version will be released this autumn".

Besides, wouldn't it look bad on the iPhone's screen? The PSP had it bad enough.

It's all about the market and the perception of said market. In a market, like iOS, where sums of $1 and $2 are the norm, $5 is a bigger investment and $15 is absolutely huge. A $60 game for the 360 is within that market's norm, whereas $70 (CoD, for example) is perceived to be expensive.

It's all about perception. If SE dropped their prices to a third of what they are, I would wager their sales would rocket.

I'm not going to lie...that hurt, because they haven't announced the second fire emblem DS game in the US/EU/AUS ares yet T_T. So points to you sir, for making me remember a game I wanted and won't get unless I learn another language.

Arguably we have more money to throw as Android phones are generally cheaper and we pay less on monthly deals (in the UK anyway)

$15 USD is expensive when you can download the PSP version from the PlayStation Store for $9.99. Granted, the PSP version has it's problems that are SUPPOSED to be fixed on this port but $15 is still expensive for this game.

Why would you want to play FFT with a touch screen. That kind of menu navigation is always annoying on an iphone/ipad. More to the point, why would anyone re-buy the worse version of Tactics Ogre? Especially now that there's an even better version of Tactics Ogre.

Ahahahaha, oh no no no no xD
They haven't said shit about a Fire Emblem for the 3DS, but considering they re-released a Japan-only FE, one of the best ones ever, for the DS, it wouldn't surprise me if they released 1-3 more for the 3DS in a super-awesome package of awesomeness, or just made another one from scratch.

So, a FE for 3DS doesn't exist yet.
But its Intelligent Systems, and they are very good at what they do.

Edit: I would be VERY VERY VERY shocked if no FE came out for 3DS. They've had one on just about every major Nintendo system in the last while.
And by "while" I mean forever.
