DICE: Annual Battlefields Would Be the Kiss of Death

Battlefield 3's producer delivers some undisguised criticism of Activision's yearly shooter releases.

Electronic Arts and Activision are the two largest third-party publishers of videogames so there is going to be some animosity between studios working for either side. Arguably the most intense arena of competition between the two is the shooter genre, with EA's Battlefield and Medal of Honor franchises on one side and Call of Duty on the other. Patrick Bach from Swedish developer DICE doesn't think that EA would ever force his team to produce a game every year because that would result in low-quality product. Bach also dismissed the notion that another studio could step in to handle development every other year like Activision has done for Call of Duty.

"We need the time to be able to create the next game that consumers will hopefully like," Bach said. "If we were to release another big Battlefield title next year, that would mean that we'd have less than a year to build it, and that would mean that we'd have to have another studio building it for us, which would mean it wouldn't have that DICE seal of approval, which would mean they'd just have to release a copy of the game we just released.

"Ugh, no," he added.

Bach is confident that his publisher would never force that kind of schedule on Battlefield. "EA would never force us to release a game every year. I think that would dilute the vision of the franchise, and you will eventually kill the franchise by doing that," he said.

Bach didn't rule out that EA was interested in releasing Medal of Honor and Battlefield games on a revolving annual schedule, but that he would never allow another studio to touch DICE's franchise the way that Infinity Ward and Treyarch do with Call of Duty. "That would be the day. I know for sure that there aren't any discussions about doing that," he said.

"That would be the killing blow for the franchise."

Man, he certainly talks a lot about the Battlefield franchise dying and being killed. I suppose that's a necessary character trait when you make games involving shooting and killing as many people as possible. But Bach didn't escape the interview without a few more backhanded comments about his competitors at Activision.

"What we noticed with Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was that if you spend enough time on making an expansion pack like Vietnam there's enough content to make it feel new and fresh. It's not only a map pack, it's weapons and vehicles, and it makes the game feel fresh again," he said.

"I think that's a more healthy way of expanding on the game experience. It's not a new game but a twist on your old game, and I think that's a healthier way of looking at a franchise rather than just trying to cram every single last penny out of it."

Zang!

Thank God.

That was one of my biggest fears with the future of Battlefield.

This is great news, since the Vietnam DLC was really justified (price related), unlike doing 4 random maps, BUT-

Is it me, or did they not announce yet the BF3 PC requirements yet? I mean, I've been searching for them everywhere!

That's funny, because they have provided more Battlefield every year since the series began. Admittedly quite a lot of that is expansions, but it's still a retail release of Battlefield every year. Proof

Yeah, not the same as a new game every year though and with how disappointed I was in Black Ops, with the best part of it was making my Emblem, I would BEG DICE to not do this. They're big boys, let them do their work, and all is good!

Calumon: There's too many gruff-man-shooty-fight games anyway! Why can't we have something that's nice and gives me snacks? :D

Most of those are just expansions or map packs for existing Battlefield games though, or Arcade/PSN games, not the full-blown BF games he was talking about.

"Full" Battlefield games released only really include: Battlefield 2 (2005), Battlefield 2142 (2006), Bad Company (2008), Bad Company 2 (2010).

Battlefield 3 does come out this year making it the second year-later release, but unlike Call of Duty is quite obvious that DICE has been working on BF3 for a long ass time.

And here is your snack Calumon:

Don't give them any ideas, Patrick Bach.

DICE ( or rather thier masters , EA ) are just as bad as Activision...

Does anyone here remember the pre launch of BC2, its stabs at CoD ?
Specifically how it wouldnt divide the community with mappacks and that all its maps would be free ?
Yeah, we all saw how that turned out.
The free maps were all rehashes of the launch maps ( ie added rush modes to conquest maps or visa versa ), then launched a mappack err no... a expension with new maps later.
Sure the expansion did have a lot of content, but it did divide the community... and it was announced too soon after launch and as there was a lack of support for maps and servers, the community wasnt as robust as say the BF 2 community is... crack, split community.

In short, DICE should STFU as they aint no better than Activision.
Hell look at all the pre-order crap for BF3 out there already, and you too can buy the shite later if you dont pre order now.
SPECACT pack and Karkland stuff, and possibly the pre-order weapons and items... they said it was a timed exclusive, no one said you wouldnt have to buy the stuff when the exclusive time was up.
Hmmm ?

Dont get me wrong I got BF 3 or pre order for the PC, but I aint eating the whole line of BS laid out :p

At the bottom of that list, it says they're collaborating with BioWare on Mass Effect 3.
...
Why didn't anyone tell me this? I then go to the linked article and I get this. http://www.trueachievements.com/n3592/dice-helping-bioware-with-mass-effect-3.htm

Then I think...
...
Makes sense. Mass Effect has guns in it, you want them to make them sound satisfyingly badass. And there's probably no one better for that job. Anyways...

OT: Good for them. Hopefully this means we'll get Mirror's Edge 2.

I never played either Battlefield of CoD, but my best friend is a big FPS fan and he says that the former is a lot better ever since Treyarch took the later over.
And I generally opose yearly titles of a game, not only does it force them to come up with contrived new gameplay ideas to justify the new titles but also one year is a very small time limmit to make such a huge game.

Oooh, another CoD comment, DICE? It's almost like you're trying to hype your game by constantly comparing it to another, better one.

Also, not being able to top yourself since 2005, that must hurt, too.

The PR for BF3 is doing its best to make me think about skipping BF3 as a form of a "well, fuck you", DICE. Cut it out.

It's not a backhanded comment at CoD, it's just saying the truth (he be telling it like it is, yo!). CoD is not the only game that just shells out map packs, most online FPSs do. And while there's nothing really wrong with that, what's wrong is that they keep charging you and they keep charging you rather exorbitant prices for what they're making, considering that if they released the mod tools, the community could make more and better maps than what they rip your 15$ off for. While DICE doesn't release the mod tools, when they just throw out a map pack, it's a free update to the game, not something they use to thin your wallet.

And that ladies and gentlemen, is the reason I prefer Battlefield over CoD, DICE over Treyarch/Infinity Ward and EA over ActiVision. I'm not sure if the developers have more heart and/or balls, if the publisher's less of a greedy jackass or both, but either way it always results in a far more quality experience imo.

Okaaaaaaaaay. That's really different guys. Two different but very similar FPS games back to back by different studios under the same developer nothing like historical CoD by Treyarch and Modern Warfare by IW at all
