Minecraft Developer Cranks Out Quickie Dungeon Crawler

Minecraft mastermind Notch took just 48 hours to whip up Prelude of the Chambered, which you can play for free.

Markus "Notch" Persson, founder of Mojang and famed Minecraft developer, competed in a game-making contest as a surprise entrant last weekend. Called the Ludum Dare, designers were tasked with coding a complete game within 48 hours, using "escape" as the theme. Notch's result is Prelude of the Chambered.

Imagine the offspring of Minecraft and an old-school "collect items to open doors and progress" romp.

"It's an action based dungeon crawler with six levels, four boss fights, and plenty of secrets and loot," Notch said via his blog. "It takes about 20-30 minutes to beat the game, and if you die, you need to start over from the beginning."

My 15-minute session led to a painful demise at the hands(?) of a floating eyeball orb thing. The game certainly doesn't do anything unique or revolutionary, but considering the circumstances under which it was crafted, Prelude of the Chambered is an impressive little title.

If you like Notch, Minecraft, or free stuff, check out <a href=http://s3.amazonaws.com/ld48/index.html>Prelude.

You could have gone beyond just mentioning the competition it's for.

Ludum Dare is a "make a game in 48 hours solo competition". It's designed to push developers to make a finished project, and to do something interesting.

There are 599 freely availible games there ( http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-21/?action=preview ) - and not only Notch's is worth playing. (Disclaimer: Mine is one of them).

I can just imagine Mojang AB sitting around doing nothing and then suddenly a developer says "we should make a free game!" and then Notch agrees. I mean really, this is rather random, no?

Edit: First try died on the golden eyeball boss, pretty fun overall.

Some of the walls have crack marks, If you press the spacebar you can break through them.

There's another wall or two you can crack open to find the dungeon, there's a power glove there that will help.

good to see someone interested in the whole story and not just stuck on their notch fanboyism. +1 good sir for giving voice to the little guys in an article that proves that something's only cool if one of the popular kids is a part of it.

I got to the Temple and got mudered by invinsible ghosts which is wierd because I could to kill the first ghost by destroying the shrine thing.
This whole "make a game in 48 hours" is a really concept. Amazing how Notch and the other game makers managed to do things like puzzles and hidden collectables in such a short time.

Argh! That room where the walls are ghosts is both hard, annoying and UTTERLY CREEPY. That's Notch for you, alright. He can even make a few white sprites look horrifying.

But the labriryinth is too much. Got lost and killed by the golden ghost thing. And I feel that was the endgame too.
Same, at first I was freaked out, then I was pissed off when I realised what I had to do. Being chased through a maze by a boss that can travel through walls and shoot... acid, or something, at you? Damnit Notch.

There is a game making competition and all you're doing is idolizing notch?

Everything in the world is just so upside down :(

I like Notch, but yeah I think RockPaperShotgun did a much better job of covering LD. This stinks of pop-journalism.

I've played it just now and I've got to the part with the green shooting monsters. It has that Notch feel to it. But it's also difficult. For something in 48 hours this is really good!

Kudos Notch. Good work.

I fully make a suggestion that in minecraft 1.8, there should be a recipe for an arcade console. When you make it and play it, it allows you to play this.

Yes, I think so. whos with me?!
