The World Ends With You Invades Kingdom Hearts

Neku's new partner for the Reapers' Game has been known to consort with cartoon ducks.

Ever since Square Enix released its cult hit The World Ends With You in 2008, fans have been clamoring for more. Despite the game's less-than-stellar sales, Square Enix has responded to their pleas. In the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance for the 3DS, series protagonist Sora will team up with TWEWY hero Neku to survive the deadly Reapers' Game.

The information comes by way of a new Kingdom Hearts 3D trailer at the Tokyo Games Show. The trailer shows a lone Sora searching for his friend Riku in series mainstay Traverse Town. Sora encounters Neku instead, and the two team up. Neku's appearance marks the first time in the series that a non-original, non-Disney, non-Final Fantasy character has shown up, much less joined the party.

Other information regarding Neku is scarce at this point, but expect to learn more as more Kingdom Hearts 3D coverage becomes available. The TWEWY IP had oodles of untapped potential - could Square Enix be gauging fan interest for a future game through their popular crossover series? Either way, gamers have thankfully not seen the last of Neku Sakuraba.

This is not entirely surprising, as the characters were already drawn by the Kindgom Hearts art team and it kinda resembles that game in some ways. Glad to see they're now including more characters into the franchise. Also, we'll see how Neku will play, in his TWEWY style, or traditional KH style.

Although, I noticed a little thing. It seems like Neku is still a DS exclusive, including the 3DS, unless there's plans to bring the game to the Vita or PS3 someday.

I am so pleasantly surprised by this, and even though he's probably making a simple Cameo, like most of the people who join your party in certain worlds, I now want to buy this game, and the system much more than I did when I woke up this morning.

Now, just promise me something else that's awesome and I'll pick up that 3DS in a jiffy.

With this brought up (non-such-and-such being in Kindgom Hearts) I wonder if we'll see any other Square Enix IP popping up into the KH series.

Musashi would fit in quite well, he shares a same design style and gameplay style.

Oh! Geno should totally make a cameo in the 3DS game. If people fangasm (which they will) maybe Square Enix would be tempted to let him into the next SSB game.

The creators can't do anything untill they finish Versus 13, since thats all they've been working on so far since KH2 was completed. The guys for story are available, but they have to wait for the gameplay team to finish up before they can even work on 3.

Anyways, back on topic:

Hopefully one of two things will happen: either this is also released for the Vita (unlikely, but then I'd actually have a system to play Dream/Drop/Distance on), or my friend doesn't sell his 3DS and lets me borrow it when this comes out.

All the side stories interlock with the main story, BBS was needed to learn who Sora is going to save, Coded was needed to understand how the king knew those who were in trouble needed Sora's help. Otherwise Three Would introduce so many new characters in these locations without any explanation. Why

would Ven be in castle oblivion? Why is Aqua in the world of darkness? Who are these people? Who is master Xenanort? How does Micky know him? What's the mark of mastery and why does Sora need to take it? ect.

becuase instead of actually making a sequel to TWEWY, we'll just make more KH And not even KH3. No, you're going to make more backstory so you can keep putting off KH3 or set up for KH4 and KH5 so you can explain all the backstory you keep introducing.

I admit this has sparked my interest in the 3DS, but I still wont be buying it until Nintendo comes out with the inevitable updated version.

Plus I'm way behind on the whole Kingdom Hearts Continuity thing. I played KH1, Chain of Memories and KH2, and I'm already confused.
Somehow I don't see the other games in the series clearing that up.

That sounds like it will be cool. I loved The World Ends With You and I love Kingdom Hearts. (Well the first one quite a bit, still like the others though.)

I'm as excited as anyone about this, but I'll admit, I'm a little apprehensive... If it had just been Riku and Sora in the game with Neku just being an NPC, or not even appearing at all, I would've been fine. But WEWY was a self-contained game. Sure, there were a FEW plot details left over, but there was a definite conclusion. Neku's story was over.

How many sequels to self-contained orginals using the same characters are as good as the first?
