Phoenix Wright As Directed By Takashi Miike

Takashi Miike, the celebrated Japanese director known for charming classics like Ichi the Killer and Audition, is bringing Phoenix Wright to the big screen.

Actually, that's a bit misleading. There's more to Miike's [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0586281/] portfolio than appallingly violent psycho-thrillers [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audition_%281999_film%29] and terrifying Lynchian art films [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gozu]. He's also known for his crime dramas and black comedies. His big screen adaptation of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, which we covered in the distant past [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110428-Phoenix-Wright-Objects-His-Way-to-the-Silver-Screen], arrives in Japanese cinemas on February 11th next year, and judging by the promotional image to the immediate right - released today alongside a teaser site [http://www.gyakutensaiban-movie.com/] for the movie - he's certainly nailed the look of the titular defense attorney.

There's certainly space for Miike's notoriously dark sense of humor in a Phoenix Wright film. When you get down to it, the games take place in some kind of dystopian nightmare-future where everyone has a bad pun for a name, due process has been scrapped and the courts will quite happily put people away for life based on the most trivial circumstantial evidence. Wright's profoundly cheerful attitude towards absolutely appalling murders is probably fertile ground for some grim chuckles, too.

This isn't the first time Phoenix has made the jump to other media. In 2009 all-female stage troupe Takarazuka Revue performed a Phoenix Wright themed musical [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/86424-Its-A-Phoenix-Wright-Musical] which, despite sounding madder than a box of ferrets, actually worked out quite well.

To be honest though, you put that hair on anyone and they look like Phoenix Wright.

Oh wow, that would be funny.
What, will there be a scene where Mia suddenly gives birth to a full grown Phoenix?

.... wait a minute, this is real? o_O
Huh.... okay then, I'm definitely adding this to my anticipated films list.

Yes, yes, yes, a million times yes! Miike makes awesome movies (okay, not all of them) and this short plot description sounds exactly like the kind of crazy shit he can pull off. I am so excited for this.

I shall take my diploma out on a date to this movie. It's the least I can do!

I WANT THIS MOVIE!!

This going to be glorious, beautiful, mega-entertaining trash and I mean that in the best possible way. From someone who would hesitatingly label himself a Miike fan I can see enough in his few humorous movies or more likely the humorous parts of his otherwise brutal murderfests of movies to make me think that this could work.

That actually depends on angry the ferrets are; if they're pissed then yeah, it'd be messy. But if they're just chillin' or asleep then it'd be an awfully cute thing.

He hasn't just directed ultra disturbing horror flicks, apparently he's also apparently done a bunch of received children's movies. The man is crazy prolific, I mean just look at his filmography...

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0586281/

86 titles! That's a hell of a lot of films.

Takashi Miike and Phoenix Wright? YES YES YES YES YES!!! I don't think I've ever seen a bad movie by him, including Sukiyaki Western Django. I heard bad things about it, mostly due to the Japanese cast speaking "Engrish" throughout the entire movie. That actually made it so much more awesome to hear people speaking tough guy lines in broken English.
