Trailer Proves Grand Theft Auto V Set in Los Santos

Rockstar's first trailer for the next GTA shows a fictional Los Angeles similar to San Andreas.

Grand Theft Auto V will be the first numbered sequel in the series to be set in a new city. Both GTA3 and GTA4 kept to the New York City clone, while Vice City and San Andreas were representations of Miami in the 80s and Los Angeles in the 90s. The trailer released today on Rockstar's website shows glimpses of modern-day Los Santos in the throes of recession.

The trailer is short on details but long on atmosphere. The voiceover is a male voice - so the rumors of a female protagonist are pretty much dashed - that describe the move out west as going "straight" and giving up the criminal life to settle down with a family. Images of the skyscrapers and graffitti of the city are cut with palm trees and beaches. But as a crop duster gasses some migrant field workers, the tone turns bleaker. Like all Rockstar joints, the trailer blends music, character and iconic images to evoke some pretty strong emotion.

All the talk of the new game made me pop in the disc for GTA4 and I was pleasantly surprised that the 2008 game still holds up as an excellent portrayal of the criminal underworld and the city of New York. More than a few of GTA4's images made me homesick for when I'd drive around Brooklyn in my 1988 Volvo station wagon.

I don't have the same affection for Los Santos that I do for Liberty City, but this trailer has me extremely excited to get back into the atmosphere and open-world story-telling that Rockstar pioneered with the Grand Theft Auto series.

Rockstar and Take Two haven't announced a release date for GTA V, but my money is on holiday 2012.

This. Is .The. Shit.

I am very much excited; I try not hold high expectations, but this really looks as fantastic as a teaser trailer ever can.

My only concern is that it's relatively recently that we were last in Los Santos- in the game before last. Not that GTA has ever had a particularly large range of cities (just Liberty, Vice, London and the San Andreas area to my knowledge) and I suppose 2004 was a while ago...

It looks good, and I'm happy to see a return to San Andreas.

I'll be looking forward to more trailer reveals in the future.

The game looks great. Now all we need is a release date. I typed in http://gtav.com and its a website with information on grand theft auto 5. Is that rockstar games fan site for the game? They have some good details about GTA V. Anyways the graphics looked pretty good and it has me excited!!

It's going to matter to me if the game is like GTA4 or not. Because if it is, I will most likely not get it. If it's really good it could make my list of games to be bought. However unlikely that will be.

I am so thrilled to be going back to San Andreas. It doesn't even matter if it's not with Carl Johnson or family, though I'd love to see some nod to him, since he'd be somewhere around ... late thirties now?

Man, so hyped.

Some people have said that it is CJ in the Bill Cosby sweater in the trailer, I'll agree for now since you never really get a good look at the npc's face.

Graphically it looks the same as GTA4, not a deal-breaker or anything, but kind of strange. I swear lots of those models were re-used straight from GTA4, too. However, I did notice a jet fighter, which hopefully can be piloted by the player, no fixed-wing aircraft was a huge downside in GTA4. Bring back the Harrier!

The voiceover almost sounded like Ray Liotta, who ocied Tommy Vercetti in Vice City. All this talk about retiring from the life and what not would make sense, as he became the main drug lord of Vice City in the 80s, and so he "retires" to Los Santos to get away? That'd be pretty epic

I'm a little disappointed it didn't turn out to be set in London, but if it is to be based in America again then this is as good as we could have hoped for, the environment looks very nice.

Looking pretty decent. I was hoping for a female lead, but I guess I will just have to wait till the next one... Anyway, loving the atmosphere. And it will be interesting to see a "family-man" in the main role this time around. I just hope they keep the story as serious as 4, 'cause 4 had a great story. *crosses fingers, hoping game will be good*

Hope they don't make it a silly game like San Andreas. What rubbish.

I'd like to see more of the GTA4 stuff this time round. Leave the retard stuff to Saints Row and all the fools who play them.

So, more of the Greek tragedy stuff.

I didn't think it sounded like him but that guy looking over the skyline looked like an older Tommy. But I don't think anyone from last gen will show up.

I have to say I'm kind of disappointed. It's not a retro style game; not a dealbreaker. But the biggest problem I have is that it's not San Andreas, just that first Island.

Well fuck. I guess my hopes of this not being a boring game that takes itself way too fucking seriously are ruined then.

There may still be a choice or male or female in it, maybe even a choice of race as well. Could be you just work for the guying doing the voice over and maybe towards the end take over from him. Who knows, i guess anything is possible. Have to wait for more info. One thing i hope they change is the suicidal cops that crash into you at 100 mph. This got retarded as it ruins all the realism the game had.

I thought the same thing, though I didn't realize he voiced Tommy Vercetti.

You never know. Even if they only kept you to Los Santos, that's still a decently-sized area. I wouldn't be terribly sad at all about that.

I dunno, man. CJ in a Cosby sweater? Even now I couldn't see that happening. Why the hell would he be walking randomly around Los Santos? He's a millionaire, with ties to the casinos and the Mountain Cloud Boys, Madd Dog's manager and a successful garage business in San Fierro.

Man, I really hope there's some nod to Woozie, too! And Cesar.
