Bastion Narrator Helps Nerds Tie the Knot

Getting married is cool; getting the narrator from Baston to narrate your nuptials is cooler.

If you've been to the altar, you know how recent groom Jay Greschner probably felt: somewhat exhilarated, and somewhat terrified. Wouldn't saying "I do" be much easier if you had a calm, reassuring voice narrating the wedding's pivotal events as they happened? Greschner, after writing an impassioned email to Bastion developer Supergiant Games, got just that. Logan Cunningham, the game's narrator, recorded a set of unique voice clips for Greschner's ceremony - a huge, but welcome, surprise for the unsuspecting bride.

Greg Kasavin, the game's lead writer and creative director, received Greschner's e-mail and replied right away. Although Greschner included a number of sample lines in his email, Kasavin explained that the Narrator had a reputation to uphold, and offered to do the writing himself. Greschner accepted, and Kasavin and Cunningham recorded four brand-new lines just for Grescher and his fiancée, Hayley Watson.

During the ceremony, Greschner entrusted his brother with playing the clips at predetermined points. True to form, Cunningham's clips narrated the action as it was taking place, whether he was describing the bride walking down the aisle, the couple's marital kiss, or the auspicious absence of cell phone noises. While some brides might view any deviation from their planned wedding as grounds for an early divorce, Watson loved Cunningham's low-key, cool-as-ice performance. "[Things] went off without a hitch and the custom recordings from the Narrator completely floored my wife," said Greschner.

Mr. and Mrs. Greschner are now happily married, with a little help from a game company that cares about both its products and its fans. We wish them the best, and hope that they get to spend lots of time together before that pesky Calamity destroys the world.

Wouldnt it be terrible if she left him and married the narrator.

Or HE left her and married him.

Or both married him!

I'd love to see a video of this. I've also emailed Greg Kasavin, just to say thanks for the amazing game, and he personally emailed me back thanking me. It wasn't a canned response. It's little things like that that make a lifetime customer.

It's like a racy dating sim. You gotta unlock all the good endings before you can get the threesome ending.

Bride walks up the aisle. She looks beautiful.

Groom's never been so happy.

Imagine being a gamer in the seats (or one of the bridal party). If I were there, my jaw would drop, and it would be absolutely amazing.

I SORT OF get the DC Comics wedding story. It looked actually kind of tasteful, it's an enduring legacy that probably had a long-running influence on the couple's lives, it was mutual, and a lot of effort went into it. I get Claptrap helping a guy propose, or giving that poor kid a eulogy--bringing the whole Borderlands community together to mourn his loss along with friends and family. Hell, Gearbox saw the gravity of that strongly enough to stop halfway through with the Claptrap shtick and take it seriously.

But... the Bastion narrator doing his spiel over a wedding ceremony? Nobody's gonna remember that game in two years. Except that couple. They're gonna remember it for the rest of their lives, and they'll need to live with their marriage being colored with this kitsch little piece of pop culture.

I guess it's better that it's the classiest narrator of all time and not, say, GLADOS, Andrew Ryan, Shodan, or the narrator from the Stanley Parable, but... man, I dunno. You get one wedding and one wedding only. Something like this strikes me as just being off, like wearing a logo tee to the ceremony instead of a tux. Maybe if I heard the dialogue or something it'd put me more at ease with it, but... ehhh.

I concur. I may be being dumb, but I get all go-go ga-ga over weddings [sub]by the by, my favorite aunt recently got married, squee[/sub] , and I love nerds and their hobbies [sub]who woulda thunk, being on this site?[/sub] so keep up the occasional wedding story! Tis much less bleak than what's on the regular news. ^_^
