Good news, everyone! Quake is now legal in Germany!

Let me give you the lowdown on what you've missed. Quake isn't the most coherent shooter ever devised but it's a technical marvel - or at least it was back in 1996. Its fully 3D engine was unprecedented and while the single-player experience was a little iffy, it absolutely revolutionized online multiplayer gaming, particularly with the Team Fortress mod, which introduced the world to class-based team battles. You guys are going to love it.

Please Andy, be careful about your statements here.
I'm no lawyer but there is a huge difference between indexing and banning.

Quake has been indexed not banned.
It was never illegal to own a copy or even to buy one. It wasn't allowed to be seen on the shelves and you have to prove your maturity to buy one. Additionally you are going to get in trouble if you sell that game to someone who is underage. But that's it!
In other words:

Especially considering that Germany never made a fuss about "sex Scenes" in Mass Effect but that's another topic.

Anyway, I could be wrong of course (Again I'm no lawyer) But according to my sources you are overreacting. Quake is no longer "interesting" or "dangerous" enough to be on the Index of "Jugendgefährdender Medien" meaning media with youth endangering content.
That's not even slightly impressive.

Couldn't have said it better, though I think they deserve less credit as their decisions isn't featured by modernistic perspective but rather in a sad effort not to lose their face (because those games are outright ugly and the whole discussion about youth endangering content is rather obnoxious.
