Aspiring 'Pilots' Wanted to Beta Test Microsoft Flight

The flight simulator's developers are looking for help in making a smooth take off.

Having flown low under the radar this past year, Microsoft Flight, a quasi-reboot of the popular (and long thought cancelled) flight simulator series produced by Microsoft, is set to launch into an invite-only beta starting next month.

The last game in the franchise see the light of day was way back in 2006, with Microsoft Flight Simulator X. The series was thought scrapped in 2009 when Microsoft laid off the entire team [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/88910-The-Death-of-Microsoft-Flight-Simulator] behind its creation during a restructuring of its game development division.

The genre of flight simulation itself hasn't fared much better the past few years either. With the exception of several games that offer a kind of arcade-style version of flight simulation, such as Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X and the Ace Combat series, games that try to emulate a realistic flying experience have all but dropped off of the radar in popularity. Few details have been revealed about Microsoft Flight, and other than a host of screenshots and webisodes avilable at the game's website [http://www.microsoft.com/games/flight/#], there's not much to go on as to how the game may relaunch either the series or the genre.

Interested gamers or flight sim fans can register for the beta here, [http://www.microsoft.com/games/flight/#news-beta_program_accepting_applications] but will need both a Windows Live ID and an Xbox Live/Games for Windows Live Gamertag. The first round of accepted testers will be able to play the game sometime in January of 2012, provided they accept a non-disclosure agreement forbidding them from sharing any info on the game, including screenshots or their impressions on the gameplay.

My little brother used to dream about being a pilot, and he would play those flight sim games for hours and hours.

Then one day he got to fly a plane in real life.

I hope this game succeeds.

I've never found a game less immersive and entertaining than an ordinary flight simulator, but my dad goes nuts for them.
