Star Wars Intro Plays on Escalator

An Israeli escalator transports citizens to a galaxy far, far away - and also upstairs.

Between theatrical releases, VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-ray, comic books, novelizations, and gimer stick [http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/e34ed3fcba/star-wars-retold-by-someone-thats-never-seen-it-from-joenick] at. However, until recently, the lucrative pedestrian conveyor market remained untapped. Fans will be pleased to know that the Tel Aviv City Hall has brought balance to the Force, and implemented the first-ever Star Wars text crawl on one of its escalators.

The reasons behind this new form of interstellar travel are not clear. Presumably, city officials wanted to spice up their escalators to generate some goodwill and amusement, since going to an average city hall can be a boring or intimidating experience. While the down escalator displays a general space theme with planets and stars, the text from the beginning of Star Wars (A New Hope, for anyone who saw the movie after 1981) adorns the opposite escalator, traveling appropriately upwards [http://geeks.thedailywh.at/2011/12/11/escalator-wars-of-the-day/]. Aside from displaying the iconic text in its unaltered form, there is also no clear reason why the crawl appears in English instead of Hebrew.

A simple homage to one of the most beloved sci-fi movies of all time probably won't make picking up permits or filing complaints with the city any more fun, but it may make the citizens of Tel Aviv feel that the Force is with them. When dealing with long lines, red tape, and bureaucrats, sometimes, that's all that stands between a Jedi Knight and the temptation of the Dark Side.

If this doesn't appear in Iran's new anti-Israel game, [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/114746-Rumor-Iran-Responding-to-Battlefield-3-with-Anti-Israel-Game] I am disappoint.

OT: This is awesome. Why didn't we in America think of that?

How I wish more places had that kind of personality. Things would be considerably more interesting with character.

Any ideas for an elevator? Aside from classic Star Trek, of course.

So they have the best airport security in the world, and now this!

Actually the entire thing was the idea (and work) of an Israeli graffiti artist called Dover D. He's the one who pitched this to the city officials (though it is nice that they agreed).
More pictures and information (in hebrew though) here:

Aw, that's cute. I would like to hear something like that from my city.

Oh I am feeling so much national pride right now. Recent events have lead me to think that maybe, just maybe, geek culture is becoming more public here in Israel (it's more underground than in most countries, from what I've seen). One can hope. :D

That's crazy ^^
It's cool that grownups can show sometime that they also can be a bit laid back and do stuff just because they can xD

"... more formats than you can shake a gimer stick at," eh? What if I gave you a gaffi stick? Probably more useful for shaking at things, wouldn't you think?

I can't tell you how hard I am kicking myself for not thinking of that. Oh well. Next time someone makes an unusual Star Wars display, I'll see what I can do!

Apparently that sort of thing isn't uncommon, but it's usually for advertising.
