Politician Resigns Over Downfall Video

A Scottish politician has been forced to resign his post as a social media strategist after making a Downfall video poking fun at an opposing party.

We all know what Downfall [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downfall_%28film%29#Parodies], which chronicles the final 12 days of Adolf Hitler's life and the end of the Third Reich, and insert their own subtitles over the original dialog, resulting in Hitler raging over everything from Rebecca Black to the fact that people won't stop making Downfall videos. It's a famous meme and a great one, which is probably why Scottish Labour politician and social media strategist Tom Harris decided to make one about the Scottish National Party and SNP Member of Parliament Joan McAlpine.

The trouble began when McAlpine tweeted that opponents of the Scottish National Party, which advocates for an independent Scotland, are "anti-Scottish." Harris' video makes the obvious point that her statement encompasses an awful lot of people in Scotland, and while he maintains that the point is valid, he also acknowledged that the way he made it is not.

"The video I posted has been a well worn joke used to parody a range of public figures," Harris said in a statement. "However, context is everything and in the context of Johann's [Labour Party Leader Johann Lamont] and my desire to improve the level of political debate on social media and the context of Joan McAlpine's much more serious statements about all political opponents of the SNP being anti-Scottish, my actions have been an unhelpful distraction for which I apologize."

Familiarity with the political situation in Scotland will obviously go a long way toward making this video funny [or at least relevant] but even without such knowledge, there's just something about watching Hitler go off about his lousy week that's a kick all by itself. But there's also something vaguely unfortunate about removing a man from a social media post because he puts a video online that might attract an audience beyond the usual crowd of political junkies. Isn't that the point?

The reason is why the guy had to go was because the the labour party recently caused a minor hue and cry about a conservative MP who attended a stag do where someone else was wearing a Nazi uniform. After forcing a sacking from a junior government post for merely being near someone who thought it was funny to wear a nazi uniform. They just couldn't keep him in post without, rightly, being accused of hypocrisy.

A video where he equates the current Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond, with Hitler. I don't know how public 'Nazi' gaffs are recieved in the US, but they're still seen to be in very bad taste over here.

Well of the two parties, only one of them had founder member call for fascist uprising in Scotland, I'll give you hint it wasn't Keir Hardie.

True enough, but as article you posted makes clear, MacDairmid was a communist and committed nationalist; not a facist. Tracing the context of his political history, he "flirted" with facism (a concept still in its infancy at this time) when he believed it could be used as "the doctrine of the left" but abandoned such ideas when presented with the true face of facism in Italy and Germany.

A man, who upon hearing about a new political concept and ponders on its potential for spreading communism but later abandons this new concept in the face of its real evil, is not of the same ilk as Adolf Hilter. Whether, MacDairmid was a humble man who recognised his mistakes, or an opportunist who changed horses mid-race, I can't say, but he was no Nazi.

Nevertheless, this "sins of the father" approach is an unreasonable argument by which to decry Salmond as a Nazi. Feel free to call him all sorts of things based on what he himself does, but don't throw a dead man, from a different era and context, at Salmond and expect him to account positively for all MacDairmid actions.

I don't care what anyone says- the best Downfall parodies are these two by far:

Erm, so yeah. Something on topic. Um... this one isn't as funny as two videos I could think of...

Oh it's no use. Just watch these two. At least one of them will make you giggle...
