Syndicate Coming to GOG

Syndicate, the hyper-violent mid-90s Bullfrog classic, is coming to GOG on Thursday.

You probably know by now that Syndicate is being "Riddick [http://www.amazon.com/Syndicate-Xbox-360/dp/B0050SY9WC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326821926&sr=8-1] games. You may not know, however, why Syndicate was chosen for the overhaul, or why so many decrepit old-timers are so worked up about it. Here's your chance to find out.

The original Syndicate [http://www.amazon.com/Syndicate-Plus-pc/dp/B000FEWSTW/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1326822015&sr=8-5], in which people are kidnapped, rebuilt as cyborgs, pumped full of drugs, armed to the teeth and then turned loose on territories held by rival corporations, is coming to Good Old Games - GOG, if you prefer - on Thursday, January 19. As always, the game will be updated to run on modern hardware, and will be available for the stupidly low price of $5.99. And in case that's not cheap enough, ten copies are being given away to the best ideas for four-man cyborg squads submitted to the GOG forums.

Syndicate was a groundbreaking game and it's pretty seriously retro, too, so it naturally suffers from a number of "quirks" in gameplay. It's also awesome as hell, and for six bucks? You just can't go wrong at that price. Full details about the upcoming Syndicate release and giveaway are available at GOG.com [http://www.gog.com/en/news/syndicate_on_gog_com_on_19th_of_january_plus_a_contest].

I definitely plan on grabbing this. When it originally came out it was a little before my time (I was 10), but it's certainly up my alley now.

I remember playing this when I was a kid. I was always amused by the audio track. Whenever you clicked to change weapons, a vaguely humanoid voice said "selected"

At least I think that's what it said. To me, it always sounded like "gelatin".

I'll be honest, reading that headline made me scream like a little girl ... except in a decidedly manly fashion.

I guess that's $6 gone.

Well it's about damn time this game got a legitimate distribution channel... rather than having to live in the legal limbo that is abandonware.

Thank you for picking that particular screenshot. I forgot how much the Gauss Gun resembled a dildo. Ah, childhood innocence...

And just the other week I dragged out my 3.5" floppy version of the game and got all nostalgic about real and proper manuals (not the frigging PDF pamphlets games these days give you )and contemplated tracking down a floppy drive and trying to get it to work again.

panic surge ACTIVATED!
man, i gotta play that again, with sound.
way back then, when i played the dos original, my "computer" had a monocrome screen and no sound device xD so this will be a whole different experience for it.

i hope the manual is included. that thing alone was a piece of art.

ahhh, those were the days, when peter molineux was still sane and full of good ideas.

but i didn't find it to be really brutal. no blood and such. depressing and alarming in a way, yes, with kidnapping humans, amputating their limbs and replacing it with cyberware and drugging them to do your bidding. but hyper-violent is not the word i'd use.

There was plenty of blood in the version I played, not to mention all the screaming and running around when you set people on fire. Civilians were fair game, too. I think I'm going to stick with my definition.

ahh well the screaming. as i said, my computer back in the day had no sound device. but from what i heard the screaming was pretty hellish, so ok.

as for blood, i don't remember any and couldn't see any in the lets play videos i watched, but it's been a while and i could be misremembering.
edit: correction, just watched a lets play video, and there is some blood puddeling under dead people, point taken.

another thing i'm not sure if i remember it right or not: wasn't there a monetary penalty for killing civilians?

This.. may be heresy to some and a reasonable question to others. I see no word of Syndicate Wars coming to GOG as well?

I never played the original Syndicate, just the PS version of Wars. I am tempted to enlighten myself with the original (and would get the sequel without second thought if it were available) but Steam sales have also left me with a biiig backlog of games to play.

Oh yay! Now if only they could get System shock 2 up.
I would like to kindly tender a Fuck Yeah to your excellent proposition.

As far as their four-"man" cyborg team...

T-800-The Heavy

Robocop-The Hero

Adam Jensen-The Lancer

Motoko Kusanagi-The Girl/The Brain

Beat that.
