Indie Game Dev Extols the Virtues of Zynga

The head of Pot Farm studio East Side Games is perfectly okay with Zynga's approach to making games, because it's also the best way to make money.

There's no shortage of Zynga detractors floating around the internet these days, thanks most recently to the copy-paste design of Zynga Bingo [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/115475-Indy-Dev-Calls-Zynga-Out-Over-Plagiarism], both of which are widely seen as blatant rip-offs of other indie games. But at least one indie developer has no problem at all with Zynga's behavior and in fact sees it as a good thing for the growth of the casual game business.

"I am one of the people who ruined Facebook for you all. It was a nice, happy place where we could all share things with our friends, and myself and a little company you might have heard of called Zynga came along and exploited the shit out it," he said at the January 2012 Full Indie [http://www.fullindie.com/] meet-up. "The first $100 million that Zynga made, I signed most of those checks. So together, we're proud to say, Pincus and I have destroyed the experience for you all."

The comments are obviously tongue-in-cheek, but Bailey did have a big hand in turning Zynga and Facebook into the monsters they are today. He co-founded Super Rewards [http://www.srpoints.com/] in 2007, "which pioneered the monetization on the Facebook platform, paving the way for the virtual goods-based games that dominate the platform today." Super Rewards was acquired by Adknowledge in 2009, giving Bailey "a healthy eight-digit exit," but even as the CEO of indie studio East Side Games he's still a big believer in the system.

He also doesn't have a problem with ripping off other game designs and in fact claims that the games Zynga is accused of swiping were themselves heavily based on ideas found elsewhere. What makes it acceptable, he said, is that Zynga always improves upon the ideas it steals.

"So Zynga continues along this plot of finding a great game, ripping it off practically pixel-for-pixel, but there's an important thing to note - that is that Zynga always gives it at least a plus-one," he said. One of the things Zynga "did right," he noted, was reducing the amount of in-game currency it gives away in Dream Heights compared to Tiny Tower.

"If you play Tiny Tower, they're constantly spitting out tower bucks for you," he continued. "Zynga on the other hand is incredibly cheap and never gives that shit out for free, and that's why they have a $10 billion company."

The whole thing comes across as a little greasy at first glance, but there's truth in his words. Sleazy or not, the Zynga formula is a big success; artistically bankrupt, perhaps, but business and business, and it's hard to argue with a billion-dollar IPO [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/114505-Zynga-Officially-Values-Itself-at-1-Billion].

"Zynga is awesome" Bailey concluded. "I own many, many shares in this company [and] I can't wait for them to continue to take over the world. I really hope that you all go home and work hard on your games tonight and come up with great, innovative gameplay techniques, and I will absolutely rip them off next week and put them into a good game."

Thanks to ResonanceGames [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view/ResonanceGames] for the tip.

Yeeeeeaaaaahhhh...okay Mr. Bailey, here's some advice: don't quit your day job. I know you fancy yourself a comedian, but save it for the folks that can actually pull it off. That was just awkward all around. All it needed was a hackneyed "U MAD?" or "COME AT ME BRO" to complete the sordid presentation.

And people wonder why the medium still isn't taken seriously by the general public.

I didn't realize it was possible to dilsike someone more than Marcus Pincus AND Bobby Kotick combined, but Jason Bailey just managed it.

That's what cinched it.

I feel sorry for him.

Maybe his money can buy him friends.
It can buy him yes-men, which are better than friends.

Until the money runs out, anyway.

Oh hey look at all the money losing [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/114880-Zyngas-Share-Price-Heads-South], Bailey. Maybe it's time to get a new outlook before Batman throat-punches you.

Technically, since he's not with them, this only just makes him stronger. Hell, I bet he's probably lying about the shares for some ulterior motive.

He said he owns a lot of Zynga shares, and Zynga's share prices have been dropping steadily.

I firmly believe you can still make a ton of money without being a c*ck ninja (hope that doesn't get me warned / banned). It's true there's no (few) original ideas anymore but blatantly ripping a game, re-skinning it and adding a +1 to some / all features here and there is dodgy if you ask me.

Also as others have mentioned, considering he has connections / shares in Clonga, it adds less weight to him as an indie giving them the thumbs up since he has a vested interest anyway.

There are some rare occasions when someone comes along and tells you the truth, bereft of the usual PR bullshit.

So not only do we get a written confession that Zynga rip games off (like we needed one), but that they increase the grind in them immediately afterward.

I cannot hope to think of a worse game design that still actually makes money.
Such depressing news for the modern gaming world.

I have a question :
If you were in his position, why on earth would you say any of that? Why would you go to an Indie games development convention/meet-up and deliver what is essentially, a big "fuck you"?
You can think it, but you should just shut your mouth and stay away from places like that. I know he's trying to be funny, or edgey, or ... whatever, but that doesn't work in this situation. He's just an ass.

Aside from being a smarmy capitalist, he might have just potentially damaged the company. This sort of thing could be used by courts to settle copyright-theft cases.
Also, Harvest Moon is from Japan, not China. That's like saying that Zynga is based in Canada and his research was done so improperly that it's shameful. But then what should I expect? "Dream Tower, or whatever the fuck they're calling it". This guy doesn't even seem to know his own company that well. So why should we care about his opinion of this whole situation?

I don't have any problem with anyone copying this indi particular company. OR replicating 'their' games. But this particular studio is only 8 months old.

http://blog.games.com/2011/07/28/pot-farm-east-side-games-zombinis/

Interesting reading if you like to read about this further. He does focus on the money, not the innovation.

EDIT:

Follow-up on the above link gave this;

http://www.insidesocialgames.com/2011/07/28/eastside-games-pot-farm-zombinis/

This developer should put more attention into their I Like Series (ILS) of games instead of neglecting it so badly. If you go to I Like Slots, I Like Stuff Facebook pages you will see literally thousands of complaints about the application. Not one reply from the developers. They are too busy with Pot Farm. East Side Games put out a press release saying that desgames.com is closed down. That was the developer for ILS Series. So now East Side Games who owned desgames.com should provide feedback and at least reply to some of the players who post on their site. Their customer service is crap. Their accessibility to the game for many players who started playing after July 4 do not get daily credits so their accessibility is being denied in order to play the game effectively. There is no way this developer or East Side Games should get props or kudos for anything else they do until they fix ILS ? one of their leader games where there are over 40,000 players a day who are as frustrated as me. I started a webpage for player complaints and intend to charge ILS with Violation of FB TOS for developers. http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Like-Stuff-Complaint-Forum/241265305921181 is my page for ILS complaints. Help me to beat this developer down to fix the game. TYVM
Showing their [ongoing] commitment to customer service.
