Legend of Grimrock Passes the Test

The Legend of Grimrock hardware compatibility test concludes with good news.

Hardware compatibility testing for the Legend of Grimrock has wrapped up and while I'm disappointed that I didn't get to take part [because somehow I didn't know about it] I am pleased as peaches to report that things appear to have gone very well. "We received a great deal of data and there were at least 4000 downloads of the test," the team wrote in a new blog post [http://www.grimrock.net/2012/02/13/compatibility-test-has-concluded/]. "Thankfully, only a handful of problems surfaced but there's still one or two issues we are currently inspecting, mostly with very old graphics cards. Overall it seems like the game is working rather nicely!"

If Legend of Grimrock isn't ringing a bell for you, I urge you to point yourself at Dungeon Master [http://www.grimrock.net/], fusing sexy new technology with old-school, grid-based gameplay, and it looks fantastic.

The team said it might run one more test before launch but isn't yet sure it'll be necessary. Legend of Grimrock is expected to be out in early 2012 - pretty soon, in other words - for the PC, followed by releases for Mac and iOS.

Ok this just made me want to dust off my 3DO and play the two old AD&D titles I have for it (Slayer and Deathkeep). They were both dungeon crawling first person games very much in the same vein as Grimrock. Damn, those types of games do need to make a comeback.

Am I the only one not interested in a game that plays like that? I want my dungeon crawlers to play like Elder Scrolls, Diablo, or Bioware games, not a style that only existed because of technological limitations that we have since surpassed.

Can't wait for this game. Definitely looking forward to playing through this. There have been some similar games on handhelds, but meh. A good group of PC developers will do it better. It looks part Eye of the Beholder and part Shadowgate (fantastic puzzle game that was on the NES and later made it to a sequel on N64).

I was starting to consider buying the Might & Magic games on GOG, until I was reminded why I was excited about this game.
I can't wait to play it.

This is going to be so awesome! I hope, anyway. I really want this to live up to its potential.

I was playing some DOSboxed Eye of the Beholder 2 awhile back and it's surprising how well that game has held up. *****-ass hard, I was forced to give up in the Drow tunnels, but man, it's a surprisingly solid recreation of the D&D experience.

Also, Stonekeep? Damn n00bs!

Stonekeep was WEAK (though you gotta love those hilarious FMVs!).

I'm with ya on Eye of the Beholder though, those games are still a blast. I just hope the puzzles in Grimrock aren't as insanely opaque as the SSI games...but I bet they are.

That was a fun game. Looked gorgeous, too. I remember cribbing some textures from it for a Doom level I did. Oh, and the bad guy was dressed like Q was during ST:TNG's first episode. THAT was... weird.

It was no EOB, but it had its moments. Memorable things about that game for me were the anime dub voice actors involved, the weird random Cthulhu Mythos shoutouts, the cookie recipe, and the weird bug where occasionally things would quack like a duck when injured.

Sneaking through a place called The Palace of Shadows, fighting disembodied skulls that are quacking like ducks. Those wuz teh days.

Unless you count the way older "first-person movement/overhead combat" games, then Dark Designs I & II by a rather young John Carmack were my preferred sources of pixie violence.

I was mostly joking with the Stonekeep "n00b" thing. Flexing my old-school muscles and all that. It didn't do much for me, I never finished it, but I did somehow end up with two copies at one point. Think I traded one for something.
