Japanese 3DS Sales Top 5 million

The 3DS has hit the 5 million units sold mark in Japan, setting a record in the process.

Data from Media Create indicates 3DS sales reached the milestone last week, meaning It took a grand total of only 52 weeks to reach 5 million sold. For comparison, it took 58 and 56 weeks for Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS to do the same, making the 3DS the fastest gaming system to reach that milestone in Japanese history.

While the 3DS isn't selling quite as fast as Nintendo expected it to [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/111045-Nintendo-Admits-3DS-Sales-Are-Below-Expectations], it's nice to see the eye-scorching, clamshell handheld pick up steam, especially given the system's weak launch. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/111045-Nintendo-Admits-3DS-Sales-Are-Below-Expectations] Critics pinned the 3DS' poor initial performance on its limited library of games, lack of accompanying services and high price, all of which Nintendo has systematically addressed over the past year. The $80 price drop, as well as a timely injection of vitamin Mario in the form of Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, seems to have done the trick. The recent Resident Evil: Revelations can't have hurt either.

Well, their competition isn't putting up much of a fight so ... it's to be expected.
On another note, mind making a Monster Hunter game for this thing? Some of us are just waiting to see which system they make it on before buying this time ...

Well, the 3DS is getting super cheap here. I can get one second hand for about 15,000 yen (about 188 dollars)..okay it seems like a lot because the yen in so strong at the moment but it is cheaper than buying a new DSi at the moment. Plus there are a lot more games available than in the UK (cannot say about America). So, it was just a matter of time before sales picked up but I think that Nintendo cannot be making much money on them since there seem to be so many going to 15,000 in second hand stores.

I will buy one when it stops having as much security features as my iphone...on second thoughts, mario DOES have a 3D tanuki suit...

Wow. With the timing their press releases and announcements. You can tell Big-N is really running scared here.

Has someone remade the "It prints money" gif for the 3DS yet? It seems appropiate here now.

Here it's already been done my friend. Glad to see the 3DS sales picking up, now all they need to do is make a Pokemon game for it and I'm set!

Awesome. I'm glad to hear it's started selling well after the shaky launch. I'm enjoying my 3DS so far, I can't wait to get more games for it.

They already have, Monster Hunter Tri G [http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Monster_Hunter_3_G] was released in Japan in December. Supposedly they're already planning on localizing [http://mynintendonews.com/2012/02/19/monster-hunter-tri-g-coming-to-united-states-and-europe/] it [http://nintendo3dsblog.com/monster-hunter-tri-g-will-be-localized-says-edge] in the west.

The only game I could potentially want on the 3DS is the Devil Survivor Overclocked.

But then again, I'd have to pay full price for a game I already played... 3 times, and I'd pay for voice-over, slightly better graphics and 8th bonus day for some endings.

That is, if I already had the thing. But I don't, 'cause it's not worth it.

Glad to see Nintendo is not in any danger of losing their top spot. Especially since I will never be able to justify a Vita at it's current pricing structure. I don't have a 3DS yet either, but as long as the library keeps growing, I'll have something to look forward to.

Regardless of what fanboys say, the good performance of a console is always a good thing. I just hope the Vita follows the same track and addresses its issues (PRICE!) as swiftly... It's an attractive system, I just can't see myself getting one with a Ā£300+ price tag (with a couple of decent games and a memory card which are both pretty much necessary, it's a colossal investment really...)

That's nice. Maybe I am will pick one up eventually, if that many people seem to like it. I'll still probably wait for the new paper mario or fire emblem game.

On an unrelated note...

So does the Escapist assign articles based on keywords, because Japan seems to be a running theme in your's.

Good, I was happy with my 3DS purchase to begin with. Despite what all the nay-sayers had to weigh in about it. Even if they deserve a slap to the face for region locking it. It's a solid system that has and is going to have a solid library of games.

Capcom, this is your opportunity to bring back Megaman Legends 3. RIGHT NOW.

It's not really as popular as Zelda, Metroid, etc but has had a good history of being good games. In short, you fight giant monsters, learn their attack patters, kill them, carve them apart, and then take what you get to the blacksmith for him to make you a weapon out of the stuff before going off on the next hunt. You also get to team up with up to 3 friends or bring along a felyne (its a cat) that can help with the fights. Try googling MHFU for a few vids. One of the main downfalls of the series is the rough startup in the games but once it gets going, like around your first dragon kill (mine was a rathian ... wyvern watever), things pick up the pace fairly fast. Give it a try. ^-^
