World of Warplanes Begins Global Alpha Test

World of Warplanes is looking for intrepid pilots to take part in its newly-launched Global Alpha test.

World of Warplanes is the in-the-works MMO sim from world record [http://wargaming.net/] for most number of concurrent users on a single server. It's not the most detailed armored combat sim ever made, but it's huge and it's fun, and that's probably what we can look forward to in World of Warplanes too.

World of Warplanes Producer Anton Sitnikau said the studio is looking for a "massive number" of pilots to take part in the test. "Our most important task now is to gather feedback from our test pilots and prepare a well-balanced, stable version with a large amount of vehicles and battle arenas, which we'll be able to enter the beta with," he explained.

The test will start with more than 20 planes from the Golden Age of warbirds, with new planes and maps added is it progresses. Planes will be divided into three broad classes - light fighters, heavy fighters and ground attack - and will feature customization options including engines, armament and ammunition types. Players will also be able to jump into a full-on career mode, going to war in fighters ranging from obscure machine from the 1930s to Korean War-era jets.

Three new regional websites have been launched to support the test: ru.worldofwarplanes.com [http://na.worldofwarplanes.com] for Russia. If you're a long-suffering Air Warrior or Warbirds veteran, this might be just the cure for what ails ya.

Consider me signed up!
This is probably also a good excuse to finally try World of Tanks, since they are (Very smartly) advertising a 'unified account' option, making you only need one account for both games. Well, I hope I get in! Looks awesome!

Odd choice of starting nations, USA, Germany and USSR. Historically speaking the Russian planes were inferior to their German counter parts and only in the post war period with the MIG 15 did the achieve parity with opponents. Its a similar story with the USA except it was 1942 when the aircraft capable of taking on the Germans rolled off the production lines. So if you are looking for historical accuracy I suspect you will have to look elsewhere.

Sounds cool. I may give the finished product a shot. Also the new "Microsoft Flight" F2P flight sim is released on the 29th. Can't wait to try it out.

Is it just me or do these guys have a thing against using British forces? I mean, In world of tanks you have American, German, Russian and most recently France tanks, which was an odd choice over Britain, but fair enough, British tanks were quite crap back then.

Yet for planes I would have thought The UK would have been one of the first choices to include, y'know... Spitfires, Hurricanes, Lancaster, Typhoon, even the Wooden Mosquito! They also had lesser known jet aircraft [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloster_Meteor], while Russia had none, and a better overall spread. Oh well, I'll just console myself by saying that they aren't included because they were like, totally the best army ever, and would dominate all the other countries and ruin the balance if they were included. Yeah, that's it. We were just too good.

EDIT: WW2 is really overdone in the plane fighter scene. Now, what I'd like to see would be an MMO air war simulator of the full Boer war campaign (1880-1902). It'd just be English gentlemen in Hot air balloons shouting insults and firing pistols at each other. Now there's a World of Warcraft killer!

ahahaha epic
well althoguht the brits had plans for jet fighters, having played WoT a lot i can tell u they will drag every experiemental plane and even blueprint that can somehow be considered part of that aera out of the woodworks to get more tiers of fighting machines......having said that considering that germany had plans for almost a dozen different jetfighters including a jetbomber bevor the curtain fell this game should be very one sided - as you said - althought with a different faction in mind.
I gotta agree with you tho in regards to WoT - french tanks??? WTF (no thats not another game thats the classic acron ;) last time i checked the french and their.....vast...*cough* tank building capabalities was overrun in a few weeks after WW2 started....but hey W/E
at least you got the churchill in WoT....althought the russians drive it - figure that one out :D

cheers

The obvious thing to bear in mind here is that the developer is Russian (broadly speaking - Eastern European, you might say) and its target audience is largely Russian. In that light, it only makes sense that Russian planes would take precedence over, say, British. The Battle of Britain predates the German invasion of the USSR, so that part of the war is probably under the Russian radar to a large degree.

You could say the same thing about Japanese planes. Japanese air power played a prominent role in WW2 but the Pacific theater was pretty much non-existent from the Russian perspective.

I can't see British planes being overlooked for too long, there are too many great, famous machines to be left out of a game like this for long. But in the early stages it makes sense: they can't leave German planes out for obvious reasons, the huge Russian market is going to want some home-grown machines and the Americans are sort of the universal good guys. Everyone else will be fit in later.

Well, Japanese planes were top notch at the start, but they didn't really get past that point, and after the Battle of Midway it was kind of downhill from there, so if they end up having every type of plane show up, they'd be heavily outclassed anyway.
