Game UK Cancels The Last Story Pre-Orders

The company has cancelled all pre-orders for The Last Story in addition to announcing plans to close 35 stores.

February hasn't been kind to Game, the UK's biggest brick-and-mortar games retail chain. A few weeks ago, news broke that the company had lost its credit insurance after wouldn't be stocking any of Ubisoft's various launch titles [http://www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk/companies/news/38549/game-group-gets-breathing-space-despite-18-million-loss-38549.html] for the PS Vita.

Now, The Last Story for Wii has been dropped from Game's releases altogether barely a day before its launch date. All pre-orders have thus been cancelled, with Game representatives saying in a statement [http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-02-23-game-cancels-the-last-story-preorders-refunds-deposits] that anyone with a pre-order receipt can reclaim their £5 deposit at any Game store.

In addition to this, Game has announced that it will close 35 of its Game and Gamestation stores in short order (the specific locations have been notified, and the company says it will aim to relocate staff where possible) and plans to reduce its overall shop count from 610 to 550 locations by Christmas 2013. Additionally the company will next week close one of its websites, gameplay.co.uk., and in doing so fold that site's functions into sister site gamestation.co.uk.

That's it for now. As mentioned above, Game (combined with its subsidiary, Gamestation) is the biggest games retail chain in the UK. Though the rest of Friday's releases should be stocked in as planned, the company does remain in the uncomfortable position of negotiating stock with publishers on a title-by-title basis; until it removes itself from this position, uneasiness about the company's future, and the revalued validity of various pre-order receipts, is unlikely to ease off.

Okay Game, this right here? Dick move. You don't cancel a preorder a day before release, making it possible people can't play on day one, and then you don't compensate with a coupon for your own company. At the very least, you give an outright refund.

Makes sense. I have 6 GAME/Gamestation stores within 15mins of where I live, so there's 5 stores I'd close if I were them.

Now if only they'd train their staff to NOT try to spoiler games as you're paying for them at the tills...

Game doesn't take your money until the game has been dispatched, so no "full" refund is necessary, the £5 people can claim is a deposit for the preorder, so claiming that IS a refund and not a compensation.

That's not to say it isn't a dick move. If they do this with my ME3 - CE i'll seriously kick up shit, so i feel bad for people really looking forward to The Last Story

Ah, I see, then I shall retract that from my complaints towards Game, thank you for correcting my ignorance. But like you say, dick move is still true from the last minute cancel.

And now to get a thousand replies of people correcting me after reading my original post and replying before seeing that it had been already corrected...

Wait, wait, wait. Gamestation is a subsiduary of GAME? Who runs Gamestation within the company then? Promote those guys - they know how to run game shops better.

They don't have a lot of choice, the publisher wont supply the game without cash up front, which more than likely they don't have. The only option they have is to cancel the pre orders and as been pointed out elsewhere they are fully refunding the money they took.

I actually found this out by trying to buy the game myself. I thought it was a bit weird that the biggest gaming chain in the country didn't stock it. Although when you look at their overall stock on their site they actually don't really have that much compared to purely online shops. At least they aren't having as bad a time as I thought. I thought that we may be seeing the last days of Game very soon. Either way I think now might be a good time to spend my reward points.
