Vita Sales Reach 1.2 Million Units

After some dicey speculation, and some less-than-thrilling early sales figures, PlayStation's new handheld seems to be doing just fine.

Sony has announced that the PlayStation Vita has officially sold 1.2 million units worldwide while breaching 2 million sales for system software (accounting for both retail and digital). The news comes after a a three-peat fiscal loss [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/115334-Vita-Sales-Get-Even-Worse] for parent company Sony. Still, as of February 19th, approximately 579,000 units had sold in Japan, allowing simple subtraction to predict a 621,000-unit launch in the United States.

"PS Vita was designed to deliver the ultimate portable entertainment experience, and we couldn't be more thrilled with the reaction we're seeing from consumers and the pace at which PS Vita is selling," said Andrew House, President of Sony Computer Entertainment. "The market has responded and there is clear demand for a mobile device capable of providing a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context."

Regardless of initial hardware sales, a continuing stable of high-quality games will be crucial to maintaining the Vita's current pace. "To sustain momentum," House continued, "we're working closely with third-party developers and publishers to ensure the best games and franchises possible will be available on PS Vita, and our software line up for the remainder of 2012 will have something for everyone across the globe."

It will be interesting to see just where the Vita goes once we get a bit father out from the net of early adopters and Sony's massive launch advertising campaign. While these early figures can't guarantee long-term success, they certainly won't hurt.

They already did that, it's called the iPhone.

Good for them. Though, even if they were crying themselves to sleep they would never admit it to consumers. I imagine that the Vita will come on slow. It'll be like the PSP, the cost made a lot of people not jump on it, but in the long run it didn't do badly at all. It was no DS as far as sales are concerned, but still good. It's never bad to have competition in the handheld market, and I don't at all mean any kind of phone, iPhone or any other.

Nice to see that the market for hardcore portable gaming is alive and well - especially given the fucked up state of the global economy.

I think they are happy enough with the PSV sales, they probably never had high hopes to begin with given Nintendo's domination of previous generations and hence aimed for the lower volume, premium high end.

They seem to have a "plan" for the future this time too.

First point that it is great the vita is selling nicely.

Your subtraction is a bit scewered though if you are correct about the 621.000 units sold in america then europe , south-america etc would not have sold any any units. If you subtract the units sold from japan you are left with 621.000 sold worldwide except Japan (and that is more then only the united states

Despite being "that Vita-hating guy" I picked up mine last week and I absolutely adore it. Great piece of kit.

If it made phone calls I would have more reason to buy it. I think I still will buy it eventually, but just not that excited. I hate the idea of having phones be your gaming device, but love the idea of your gaming device being your phone. Hypocritical much?

They said real world context.
And "Rich Gaming"

I mean, Doodle God and Fruit Ninja are fun, but in all seriousness, due to having to travel for long distances frequently I've grown used to having fully-fledged games on handheld devices, and I enjoy handheld gaming on proper consoles more than on my phone (even if I get XBL cheevos on my phone, but now I can also get trophies on my Vita...if I had one...*sobs*)

I hope Sony really expands on the cross platform thing that have going for what few games are currently released for future titles. Wouldn't it be nice to buy Infamous 3 for your PS3 and be able to carry it with you on your vita when you have to go out?

Basically what I'm saying is I hope that they can design more "core" games to work on both.

Well, I'm happy for Sony. I didn't expect the VITA to do well at all, and I felt bad for them.

The Vita is a really good system, got one recently. It's awesome. I doubt i'll even use it that much, as it is a handheld, but I hope the vita hits.

Apparently the United States now equates to the rest of the world, including Europe, one of the biggest markets for video games in the world..

I know Europe was left last with the PS3 launch, but this is just harsh.

I'm being sceptical here, but of course sales will pick up. If it's not backward compatible, previous models are no longer made and it is successfully marketed as better Sony can get away with anything.

That said, I'll probably eat my own words (and hat) by buying it later just so I can play Monster Hunter and Miku.

I'm waiting for the price drop. I bought a PSP on release, which I later began to regret. The PSP itself was good, don't get me wrong. But the release game lineup and the problems with the initial model ended up outweighing the good. I ended up using my original one and a few games to trade in for a 3000 model. I still have it and will likely be keeping it unless I get rid of all my UMD games.

This is why I never understood the "phones are better than handheld gaming consoles!" argument. Yes, a phone is more convenient if you are just riding the bus or waiting at the doctor's office but it doesn't fill all the needs of "mobile gamers."

You know what else had strong initial sales?
The PSP.
That's all I'm saying.

I'll buy this when sony eventually drops the price.

You know they will. They always do.

Also when they release monster hunter. To me any portable Sony system isn't the same without monster hunter.
