New Game Controllers Push Back on Your Thumbs

Engineers go beyond the rumble pack for next generation game controllers.

Back in 1997, adding a rumble pack to your Nintendo 64 controller was a novel idea. Despite the extra cost, having the controller vibrate in your hands when getting shot in GoldenEye was way more satisfying than I thought it would be. Nowadays, a "rumble pack" is built into every controller, but a group of engineers at the University of Utah didn't think that was enough. They built a prototype controller that changed the thumbsticks by adding a pencil-eraser shaped nubs to the center of each stick. Based on what's happening in the game, these "tactors" move and can give feedback felt on the skin of your thumbs.

[gallery=660]

"We have developed feedback modes that enhance immersiveness and realism for gaming scenarios such as collision, recoil from a gun, the feeling of being pushed by ocean waves or crawling prone in a first-person shooter game," said William Provancher, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Utah.

The tactor feels similar to the pointing stick interface made popular by IBM laptops, and provides an interesting sense of feedback, even in something innocuous like fishing games. "As the fish jerks on the line, you can feel the tactor jerk under your thumb," Provancher said.

If Provancher can sell this patent to game manufacturers for the next cycle of consoles, we might see this feature come standard. "I'm hoping we can get this into production when the next game consoles come out in a couple of years," he said.

I can't say that I've been waiting for my controller to pull me one way or the other, but this concept has promise in almost every genre. Imagine feeling it when your fighter gets punched in MvC3 or your striker gets tripped in FIFA. Or if your buddy beats you at MW3 again and you stab him in the eye with the little red nub ... "You feel that! Huh!"

I mean ... Here's a video of the controller in action.

This would be good for games that require skill and precision where you have to feel for the right moment, as for things like gun recoil, no thanks.

I've fired a gun before and wouldn't like anything resembling the recoil, it would be an immersion killer for me, on-screen recoil is fine as it is.

If they do implement it into the next gen of consoles, I hope they make an off button/option.

Dead Or Alive now lets you feel the bounce, and guide the way the objects in question perform circular motions!

While this could be really cool, it look kind of awkward to use as is. I await seeing it molded into the controllers that we know and love.

This could be really cool, but could also be really awkward. Once again, it's time for the waiting game!

About time. They've been doing something similar in racing arcades since forever ago. True feedback beats vibrating controllers in every game that Walmart is willing to stock.

Seriously, this idea is freaking brilliant. Increasing immersion like this is EXACTLY what we need in gaming.

Screw motion controls, THIS is the next evolution in gaming.

exact same thoughts.

"In soviet russia, controller motions you!"

*^lame russia joke*

seriously though, this is 100x better than any of the motion bullshit they've been coming out with in the past decade, it actually adds immersion rather than piss me off.

I was trying to work out where I'd seen that controller before,

Actually, I was thinking of something like this, except I'd be against it (Kinda).

I imagine trying to land a sniper shot, shooting once, getting the recoil and then trying to readjust myself for another shot. But by then, my location has been compromised so everyone's shooting at me while I try to land the next shot. The controller would be moving back and forth for whatever reason (Heavy breathing, bullets zooming by, etc.). I wouldn't like that.

Anyway, I like this idea a lot. It's very innovating and promising and I bet that with practice, we'll all get used to it. I mean, I don't hear anyone complaining about vibrating controllers nowadays like they used to do when they first came out.

If executed well, this feature alone could make it or break it for next gen. consoles.

I guess it might work for a few games. I dunno. I just don't like the sound of having little bits of rubber, vibrating/moving around on my thumbs. I like immersion, but even the standard controller vibrations bring me out of that for a few games. This would probably just annoy me quickly.

Welp, I'm ashamed of everyone who posted before me. How is it possible that I'm the first one to point out the FF7 music in the vid, did you guys not notice it or something? Hell, I'm not even a fan of that game.

That would probably be funnier if I couldn't see them doing exactly that in DOA6.

Could be fun if it was optional. And if the idea flops all the the major consoles would revert to what we have now. Heck, it could always just be a third party quirk some games could support.

I'm all for trying it. I ain't afraid of new things that I haven't tried before. I just don't like things being introduced that I've tried before and disliked.[footnote]I'm looking at you motion controls and touchscreens...[/footnote]

I'm about 99.9% sure the experience this controller provides is not worth the cost of the controller.

It seems like it'd be kind of uncomfortable, too.

This strikes me as one of those ideas that sounds silly but is a shitload better when you are actually playing the game and immersed in it.

Being buffeted by ocean waves translating into pushing back on your thumbs sounds dumb until you are playing a character desperately swimming for shore and every time a wave washes over you the controller kicks back, if its done right it increases the immersion.

I'm for this and just a little excited about the possibilities.

Gah, I knew I forgot to post something.

I noticed that too, but I just forgot to mention it in my post. Makes fishing a HELL of alot more exciting, I'll say that.

I can see this being useful during a survival horror game. The motion nipples could perhaps move in time with a heartbeat if something is nearby, or react in a crawling way to Silent Hill's radio static, or jab violently at your skin when a monster attacks. I know that'd be enough to make me drop the controller in fear!

But in any other game... that might just get annoying after a while. I don't want all that feedback if I'm playing a shooter and I'm killing dudes all the time. I rarely even use the rumble features of the controllers we have now because it irritates me. I want to forget that I have a lump of plastic in my hands.

So what I'm basically trying to say is...
