Job Listings Reveal Braid Creator's Next Project

Braid creator Jonathan Blow is hiring for his next (or one of his next) projects, which is apparently a "puzzle-exploration game that is philosophical, and quiet."

Since the release of his critically and financially successful Braid, Jonathan Blow has kept something of a high-profile when it comes to his 2D RPG [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/88905-Braid-Dev-Story-Based-Games-Are-Bogus], but according to the job listings he just posted, Blow's main focus may have shifted.

Blow is hiring a 3D Environment Concept Artist [http://braid-game.com/news/?p=605] for employment at his company, Number None Inc. So, there's one thing we know about this game, and one thing that makes it different from Braid: it's in 3D. Furthermore, Blow describes it as a "puzzle-exploration game that is philosophical, and quiet, and is being made for reasons other than crass profit motive." So definitely not a 2D RPG.

"This game places a heavy emphasis on the way things look, and will be a refreshing project for those who value nuance," Blow, who said he's trying to produce a "good-quality 3D game," described.

As for what Blow is not looking for when it comes to this game, well, he certainly is specific. These are the things he lists as not wanting to see in applicants' portfolios: "Girls With Big Tits; Barbarians Wielding Axes, Covered in Blood; Aliens; Space Ships; Gangsters Getting Shot in the Face; Orcs; Giant Robots; and, of course, Postapocalyptic Wastelands."

Well I guess he's not making my dream game about Orcs Fighting Barbarians Wielding Axes, Covered in Blood In Postapocalyptic Wastelands Ruled By Aliens in Space Ships Who Own Giant Robots and Live With Girls With Big Tits who they kidnapped from Gangsters Who They Shot in the Face. Whatever Blow's got brewing, the Lead Artist listing mentions "an estimated 2-year development cycle," so it might be in the works for a little while.

A new project. Oh well, let's just hope it doesn't Blow.
Eye C Wut U Did Thar

It will be interesting to see what Johnny does next, hopefully it'll be on PSN or something, but hopefully it won't, as you said, blow.

Phew. I'm glad he's not working on a 2D RPG; that's what I'm making right now. There ain't enough room on Live Arcade for the both of us. :p

I think I would prefer a game about Gangster Girls with Big Tits Covered in Blood who shoot Aliens and Orcs In The Face to get the attention of Giant Robots who fly Space Ships over Barbarians Wielding Axes living in a Postapocalyptic Wasteland.

So many possibilities...

My god... it's... The Perfect Game.

Anyway, I can't get over how pretentious this dude is. Was it really necessary to say in the job listing that it "is being made for reasons other than crass profit motive."? Get over yourself, pal.

But, Braid was awesome, so I will be keeping an eye out for this new game.

I think he's trying to say that there may not be a whole lot of money in it. Which is actually a pretty practical thing to mention in a job listing.

Braid was my favourite game of last year. This should be awesome and completely and utterly unintelligable to dumb asses such as myself.

Interesting. I liked Braid, although it was a bit monotonous at times. But it was definitely a good game, and if the next one follows the description he made good, I'll be over it like a fat kid on a twinkie. Or like a Valve enthusiast on Episode 3.
