Goldeneye Devs Brewing Kinect-Exclusive Harry Potter Game

Play through all eight movies with voice and motion-controlled minigames.

Harry Potter's legend has been told twice-over now following the completion of both the book and film series, but that isn't stopping Warner Bros. from visiting the universe once again in the recently announced Harry Potter for Kinect. Planned for a fall release, development is being handled by Eurocom, the team behind the Goldeneye remake and Disney Universe.

A teaser trailer accompanying the game's announcement shows the player being invited to Hogwarts via an owl-delivered letter. Those wishing to fill Harry's shoes can choose to play as The Boy Who Lived himself, or scan their likeness into the game and see themselves on screen. The Kinect will allow players to use gestures and voice commands to control Harry as they interact with memorable locations and characters, including a trip to Ollivander's Wand Shop and a duel against Draco Malfoy.

Notably, the press release for the game's announcement says that the game is based on the Harry Potter films and not the book series, suggesting that the content omitted in the book-to-movie transition will also be omitted here. Also important to note is that Harry Potter for Kinect's gameplay will be minigame based, with cutscenes bridging the gaps between new challenges. Given that EA's attempt to make a Kinect-based Harry Potter experience [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/8369-Review-Harry-Potter-and-the-Deathly-Hallows-Part-1] with traditional gameplay mechanics was abandoned after only one try, this may not be such a bad thing.

Harry Potter for Kinect will span all eight movies and is planned for a fall release.

Quick without thinking about it name one Kinect game that has been a financial success or better yet name one that was fun for more than 15 minutes.

Financial successes: Dance Central, Dance Central 2, Kinect Sports
Fun for more than 15: Gunstringer, Child of Eden

What is this? Where is my Harry Potter open world RPG?

This is undoubtedly just another cheap attempt to sell more Kinect units. Why are these things always "minigame based" anyway? I'm not interested in minigames. I clearly don't fall within the correct target market.

Forgot about Gunstringer, but still five out of a hundred doesn't bode well for it.

I'll allow this only if they turn Hogwart's into a Dance Club for 10-15 Harry Potter inspired dance battles.

Yeah, like I have any pull over the gaming industry.

No it certainly does not. And I'll admit to some thinking.

Oh, there will likely be several dancing segments in the game. I think that all developers making games with Kinect compatibility are contractually obligated to include a dance element.

Had I'd known that was an option, I would have gotten a kinect and ME3 just to see Shepard and Tala do Saturday Night Fever.

That's the part that I'm afraid of: dancing to dubstep with Fred & George in the RoR.

If this was an elaborate open world rpg type thing, I might actually get a 360. The Kinect is cool, they just need to do cool things with it.

Just a thought: how about Bruce Lee teaching you Jeet Kun Do by bringing you through his movies. A lot of the trapping and wrestling requires context sensitivity but there's a lot that could be done too.

Dear Matt Wadleigh,

Unless you are implying a second player will be able to cooperatively play as Draco Malfoy, the word you are looking for is 'duel'. 'Dual' means two, while 'duel' means to fight each other in sanctioned combat.

Thanks for pointing that out. You can take me out back for my forty lashings or whatever the punishments for such crimes is around here.
