Atlus Reprieves Demon's Souls Servers

Instead of closing May 31, Demon's Souls servers will stay up indefinitely.

Unlike its main character, Demon's Souls [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/6527-Review-Demons-Souls] is not ready to die just yet. Although Atlus initially stated that the innovative online mode for its super-hard action-RPG would go down forever on May 31, 2012, the company has decided to stay its end indefinitely. This does not mean that the game will remain online permanently, but gamers who want to check out or revisit the cursed kingdom of Bolateria can take a deep breath and take their time instead of rushing through it in the next six days.

A press release from Atlus states that "the servers will now continue to operate for the foreseeable future." Long-time Bolaterian demon hunters will see this as good news, but the move seems equally aimed towards new players who have not yet been brutalized by the critically praised 2009 game. "While it originally seemed as though it would be unfeasible for us to continue to sustain the servers, a number of developments have made it possible for us to continue to invest in and support our fans as they have continued to invest in and support us and Demon's Souls," says Tim Pivnicny, vice president of sales and marketing at Atlus. "For all the gamers who have yet to discover the game's amazing online experience, we're happy to say you can still log on and find out why Demon's Souls is still regarded by many as one of the finest games of all time."

This is actually the has you scared [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/113284-Demons-Souls-Servers-Will-Last-a-Little-Longer], don't be; all Demon's Souls asks to succeed is skill and patience, and now you've got lots of time to develop both.

Got this email earlier today.

It's good news for new people, or folks like me or want the Platinum for this game.

Hooray! :D

I was sad that the next time I will play this game it wouldn't be the same.

Now I can die a bunch and my death can still be a warning to people walking by me!

Hmm I guess a lot of people who liked Dark Souls are going back to the original. I kind of like Demon's Souls more than Dark Souls, even though Dark Souls did make a few nice improvements. Could just be that it was "the original" plus I had the time to play it a lot, whereas Dark Souls I haven't quite managed to finish yet.

Dark Souls was better in a lot of ways, but Demon's Souls has the superior online with it's dedicated servers.

Maybe I should give Dark/Demon'ssssssszzsszzsszs Soulzzzzszs another shot. Hmm...

I have to admit I kinda rage-quit on Dark Souls after dying a bunch of times the first hour after buying the game. I had made the mistake of attacking the first NPC I encountered, just for kicks, and he kept kicking my butt nonstop. Then other players would come out of nowhere and kill me, the n00b, while I ran in circles wondering what was going on and why was I been slaughtered.

Oh, wait. Now I remember why I stopped playing...

That's great news! But I don't know if I can really go back to Demon's Souls after getting used to the wealth of content and variability that Dark Souls offers. Plus it was always a struggle to find people to summon in Demon's Souls and I imagine it's even worse now most of the community has moved onto Dark.

Only 3 months until the PC version!

I've actually been rushing through the game to finish it before May 31. Of course, the night I get this press release and write it up, I hit the final level and will probably finish the game tomorrow morning. Ah, well. These things happen.

It's perfectly possible (even recommended, as you can control World Tendency so much easier) to get the Platinum trophy offline. But yeah, I'm glad they've left the servers open. Especially at the start of the game online hints can be very useful.

I've moved on to Dark Souls and haven't played Demon's Souls in ages, yet Demon's Souls being one of my all-time favourite games, seeing it live on just makes me happy.

This is great news and all, but does anyone even play Demon's Souls anymore? Dark Souls is basically a direct upgrade.
