World of Mapcraft Means You'll Never Get Lost in Azeroth Again

Indie developer makes a World of Warcraft map, complete to the last detail.

It's either a labor of love or madness, but whichever it may be, Glitch developer Cal Henderson has done it: he's made a free Google maps-style World of Mapcraft, [http://worldofmapcraft.com/] accurate to the nth degree. If you ever wanted to know precisely where that fort or hut is in Outlands, or found yourself wandering aimlessly in the Black Temple having lost all hope, this is the map for you. It's complete up to Cataclysm, and includes battlegrounds, dungeons, raids, every major city - even little extras like Darkmoon Faire Isle have a place on this massive map.

Henderson used his previous experience making a Google Maps version of the London Transport map to do the same for Warcraft. As Henderson describes it, "Once you have a sensibly named tileset, you just need a little bit of JS glue to load in the correct images in the correct place." Google maps takes care of the rest. Some of the maps - the outdoor ones in particular - were very straightforward, while others were much more difficult to stitch together. In only one case - the Dalaran Sewers - was Henderson forced to throw up his hands in despair, and so no matter how hard you look you won't find those on Mapcraft. Yet.

There were several anomalies that Henderson discovered by pure accident. Some, like the variant names of Scholomance and Ragefire Chasm, are interesting bits of historical data. Others, like the vast pile of junk hidden in Karazahn or the maps that exist in-game but which the developers never actually used, remain mysterious - not unlike that section on historical maps labeled 'Here be Monsters'. Henderson is still tweaking Mapcraft, and asks that any users who spot an inaccuracy or who have information that could be useful contact him directly via cal [at] iamcal.com. His blog post, which includes all of Henderson's trials and tribulations, can be found here [http://www.iamcal.com/world-of-mapcraft/].

I can explain the Karazhan errors, the top of the tower is suppose to be an optical illusion, so when you see the boss, he looks relatively small until you get close to him. The whole top rocks flying around the tower and sky and the illusion results in map errors. Different spelling due to laziness of game designers.

whats the island to the south?

(not the goblin one the other one)
They're both part of the Goblin starter area. Upper one is Lost Isles, lower one is Kezan.

That's almost exactly like he map you get within Guild Wars, only the GW one has words on it, and is useful.

Are you seriously telling me that WoW doesn't even come with a map as detailed as that? How do people get anywhere?

I don't want to take anything away from this guy's work though, it's very impressive.

Maybe I'm just weird, but I never felt lost in WoW.

I quit just before Burning Crusade was announced and started up again after Wrath of the Lich King came out. I was still able to find my way around Orgrimmar like I had never stopped playing. So yeah... it felt like coming back to a home town.

Yes, returning to WoW after years it was Easy as Cake to find my way around.

Feels like the tenth time I saw something like this...

These maps comes from the textures the game uses for the minimap.
The ingame map is different because it focuses on highlighting the important parts of the zone, along with names, that all matches into a picture like an old map.

It's a lot easier than you'd think. Quest navigation is WoW is so streamlined now it's almost impossible to get lost.

Unlike back then where you had to use wikis and community sites to find anything.

There's an addon called Carbonite which pretty much did this since.. burning crusade I think, and it's awesome. I usually play WoW on and off and I can't play without that addon any more.
