NASA Sends "Wheatley" Into Spaaaace

In space, no one can hear your meme.

The Japanese HTV-3 resupply craft is currently on its way towards the International Space Station. Alongside its cargo of food and parts, the craft is carrying an extra passenger: a tiny laser-engraving of one of Portal 2's cores, pictured on the right. The etching is the work of an anonymous NASA tech, one with good taste in games, apparently.

Now there's some to confusion as to when the HTV-3 launched. Many sites are reporting that the cargo rocket is set to launch on July 27th, while others claim it began its merry journey to the ISS last Friday. There's also some confusion as to which core is making the journey into space. The Portal 2 blog labeled it Wheatley, but as many of you are no doubt itching to point out in the comments section, the "in spaaaaaace" quote actually comes from the Space Core. Observant gamers, however, will note that the core depicted on the panel actually has Wheatley's distinctive circular "pupil" rather than the Space Core's hoop-shaped one. That may, in fact, be the nerdiest sentence I have ever typed.

Either way, one core is making the trip into space, though Valve is quick to point out that it's strictly an unofficial member of the mission.

"NASA in no way officially endorses secretly laser-engraving characters from Portal onto their spacecraft," reads the blog. "Believe it or not, they don't even officially endorse Portal 2, despite the fact that it's a really excellent game."

So Wheatley may or may not be in Space. I don't know whether this is good news or not.

That's pretty neat but it should definitely be the space core who goes to space because it's the space core and it wants to go to space, simple reason isn't it?

I love Valve's comment on the craft's name
we here at Valve are mostly just impressed with NASA's bold, unprecedented resupply craft numbering scheme.

As cool as a Portal 2 core of any variety is, there's something else that goes a bit better with the tag "in spaaaaaaaaace!"

First the cat DLC post, now this. You're killing me with these puns, Grey.

Hah! I love it when a company can poke fun at itself like that.

Wait, come to think of it, have they made anything numbered 3? Erm. ...maybe the next Portal will have a subtitle instead.

:/ lame ... though, not like the game needs NASA's endorsement to move units. I'm pretty sure just "Portal 2" is enough to do that X3

That gets really sad towards the end. But I get why NASA does not officially endorse Portal 2; after all, when it comes out that they have been grinding up moon rocks and eating them, they don't want to share the credit if something awesome happens.

Why not? What's NASA got against a video game and a good gag?

Now all we need to do is paint a blue oval near one of our moonbases, and this will officially rank somewhere among the ten most awesome things that have ever happened.

If it was Mario you know they'd find a way to a cease and desist to the space station. ...In all seriousness, very fun to see such a thing.

Gotta admit if I worked at NASA this would be something I would have to do on principle.

Kudos to whatever anonymous game-fan at their work put this on.
