New Super Smash Brothers Won't Add Much New

Masahiro Sakurai of Smash Brothers fame is wary of innovation for innovation's sake.

Little has been revealed about the upcoming Super Smash Brothers 4 game, beyond a few snippets. However Masahiro Sakurai, the man behind Smash Brothers, has gone on the record as saying he doesn't feel the game needs to change much, and isn't willing to introduce non-Nintendo characters just for the sake of it.

"The game system itself is complete, so we don't want to make it 3D or introduce complicated controls just for the sake of it," Sakurai said. He acknowledges the need for some changes to incorporate new Wii U controller options, but doesn't want to invest heavily in innovation if it brings nothing useful to the game. He says he is "thinking of ways we can introduce a slightly different, fun experience," but significant changes to the controller scheme doesn't appear to be among them.

Neither is introducing non-Nintendo characters to the brawler. "I think Snake and Sonic joining were fantastic. It made many fans happy, and it broadened the Smash Brothersarena," Sakurai admitted, but he swiftly went on to say that putting more non-Nintendo characters in would "lose the focus of the game." Sakurai would prefer to narrow down, rather than inflate, the character list. Anyone out there who hoped Tekken characters might be among the playable character list should brace themselves for disappointment.

Super Smash Brothers 4 is currently scheduled for a 2013 release on Wii U and 3DS.

I was kind of hoping they'd expand on the MGS and Sonic universes. More stages and maybe another character from each. I wanted Knuckles or Robotnik. This sucks :(

I really would want some more assist trophies...like Eggman attacking or something, but also make it that some characters aren't broken. I really like the Smash Brothers series, and while I'm unsure if I'll be getting a Wii U or not (more chance of me getting that than an Xbox 720) having a copy on the 3DS would be fun.

You can just re-release brawl for all I care as long as it came with decent on-line play.

.... and a groosenator assist trophy.

Wow. On one hand I sort of admire him saying he doesn't want innovation because it'd mess up balance, but on the other hand he could have gone out of his way to say what the ARE doing to warrant a new game. This isn't really getting me pumped up. OH MY GOD THEY'RE CHANGING VERY LITTLE, AND REDUCING THE ROSTER MAYBE. I CAN'T WAIT!!!

I'm still waiting for Nintendo to just outright buy Sega so we can officially have Sonic and his team join the Nintendo family....

... Because maybe Nintendo would finish Shenmue for us.

*sigh* So I guess I will not be getting Raichu or Travis Touchdown in this game...this truly sucks...
Yesss, Travis Touchdown would be awesome in a Smash Bros game. xD

I do hope they add some new guys though, like 1 or 2 at least.

Do wonder what else they will add to it though, modes, challenges, "story" mode. :p

Narrow down the roster, eh? Can't see that going poorly at all...

I agree with everything he said, really. We don't need Fox and Wolf and Falco. Get rid of at least one of those.

Really, the only thing I would want something better of is more a Wii U thing than a game thing: Better matchmaking. I remember spending ten minutes waiting in that practice area when Brawl was still brand new.

Ok well get rid of the clones, and just add new characters. Can't they add characters that appeared on Nintendo consoles and still make it keep it's original concept? That way there's diversity and change? I'll just have to wait and see I guess.

I think if they tightened up gameplay back to melee speeds, then people would stop griping about the lack of changes.

Sakurai. I say this to you as a fan. Of sorts.

Do NOT remove any characters from the game.

I've been hoping for more character now that they reduced the clone characters.

Add in Eggman, Tails, and Knuckles; playable Kuppas, more pokemon that would work (blaziken would work great),get some SNES Square classics like Chrono and Magnus; then for good measure make the collective community poo themselves by adding in classic MegaMan.

Sigh... I can certainly dream.

While I was kind of hoping for a sort of "And Guest Staring:" motif for new Smash characters, I general I agree with Mr. Sakurai.

Incorporating gameplay elements and characters that the developing team agrees would make the game 100% more fun without diddling with what they had is great, but trying to do so just because you did it before would come off as forced and patronizing.

I'd love to see Travis or Megaman in a SSB game but I'm still gonna stick with the decisions of the dev team until release, simply because the other games were great and there's reason to think they'd lose they're minds now.

Actualy, I completely agree with every word of this. Smash brothers is a tight game. You don't need to add fripperies to it just for the sake of adding something new. Square enix needs to learn that. I'd love to see them make a new game reusing the mechanics of older successful games.

There's no reason to go adding characters all over the place either. I'd love to see more Nintendo characters, but suddenly adding the boy from limbo and Sora from kingdom hearts and The Prince from Prince of persia would cause the game to loose some of it's charm. It's a nintendo franchise game.

What they could do is make a Nintendo vs Capcom, or Marvel vs Nintendo and include fighters from both of those. I'd buy those!

So it's the basically the previous game, being sold at the same price, only with less stuff in it...

So that's why Nintendo are so rich!

No more 3rd Party characters? Damn, that sucks.
Roster reduction? That sucks even more.

But it's Super Smash Brothers. I'm still going to buy it.

Who needs non-nintendo characters? Give us Majora's Mask Link. Give us Paper Mario, Ridley, Yarn Kirby, Pokemon x Nobunaga characters, or a fucking BELMONT! The well is far from dry when it comes to purely Nintendo franchise characters.
