Minecraft Sells 17,000 Copies a Day on Xbox Live

Recent financial statements show Mojang is still doing really well for itself.

The Swedish developer Markus "Notch" Persson is living large. Minecraft broke records when it was released as a mere beta test back in 2010, but now that it is available on multiple platforms, the game and its parent company Mojang is still printing money. According to an article in Swedish on the it24 website [http://it24.idg.se/2.2275/1.459429/mojang-mangdubblar-vinsten], the XBLA version of Minecraft is selling at an outrageously high rate, averaging 17,000 downloads a day since it was released on May 9, 2012. Managing Director at Mojang, Carl Manneh, said the company's profits will double from last year jumping from $8.7 million US to around $16 million.

Even though Minecraft is a Mojang property, Notch collects a fair amount of profits directly from sales to another private company called Notch Development. Last year, he received a large percentage of the profits, but that won't be true in 2012 now that lead development has shifted in-house to Mojang's Jens Bergensten.

"Our profits will more than double. Markus' company will also make more money, though perhaps not as high a percentage as Mojang," said Manneh. "Since Mojang keeps more of the earnings from the new Minecraft versions, our turnover increases a lot this year."

No matter how you split $16 million, that's still a boatload of cash with very little overhead for the slim independent developer. Hopefully, the whole team of 16 employees at Mojang keeps the excellent momentum that Minecraft's sales have given them.

That is just an embarrassing amount of money. Mojang could make two sprawling games that revolutionize the way stories are and that render everything down to the atomic level and still have enough cash to buy Kuala Lumpur.

(Note: This what we in the biz call a "Silly Exaggeration.)

What a joke.

Minecraft is still in development, but no one will admit it.
Like the graphics, people act like it was some sort of stylistic choice an not just Notch firing and refusing to pay a proper graphics artist.

I mean they're still using the placeholder textures and models from indev.

Can you prove this assertion?
Minecraft has had only very minor tweaks has used the same models and textures since indev.
I've bought the game in alpha, hasn't visually changed at all beyond very very minor tweaks.

Notch said he didn't like his "style" and fired him.
In reality he just wanted to cut corners and save money.
Google the list of all the things Notch had planned for the game and ultimately pulled the plug out of laziness.

As much as I like minecraft (And I -do- like minecraft) It's really a shame of how little has been done with the game.

It's just depressing how much money has been spent on a game that really hasn't seen much added to it for the amount of money that was put into it.

These days, the game is pretty much nothing without mods, and that's just sad.

That's exactly why Minecraft is getting more and more detractors every day.

The game had so much potential, but Notch clearly doesn't care anymore.
Just look at his next game "Scrolls", a digital card game for ISO devices with micro transactions.
Clearly he's making it because he knows people will buy it due to Minecrafts viral fame and success.

Anyway don't get me wrong I still enjoy Minecraft, it's just infuriating that a game with this much potential has been abandoned by it's creator.

Gah, anyway if you like Minecraft and still have a desire to try new things give Kerbal Space Program a shot.
Everyone I know who liked Minecraft really liked this game.

The site has a demo if you're curious, and the dev team does frequent updates.
All of them have added MAJOR new features.
The last one was the ability to do a space walk.
