Atari Brings Arcade Classics to Your Browser
In honor of Pong's 40th Anniversary, Atari releases its classics for free online.
Would you like a free game? And a time machine? Well, you're in luck; in honor of Pong's 40th Anniversary Atari has re-released some of its old favorites, optimized for Internet Explorer. There's some Yar fellow out for revenge, centipedes are running amok in the garden and missiles are closing in fast on your command, all of which can be experienced for free at Atari's new Arcade website [http://www.atari.com/arcade#!/arcade/atari-promo].
Well, so long as you don't mind the occasional advertisement. Microsoft has partnered with Atari this time out, so those of you with Internet Explorer - preferably the latest version - can enjoy Atari's nirvana trouble-free. The rest of you, with your Chromes, Safaris and so on, will have to endure advertisements for perhaps 20 seconds before getting the gaming pleasure you came in for. The graphics and sound have been updated, so the games seem a lot prettier than they did back in the day, but gameplay hasn't altered.
The full list includes: Super Breakout, Yars' Revenge, Asteroids, Pong, Missile Command, Lunar Lander, Combat and Centipede. These can be played multiplayer or single, and there is social networking functionality. Your tolerance for the graphic and sound upgrades may determine whether or not you like these titles, but they did come to you free of charge, for what that's worth.
