Hacker Claims to Have Found Vita Exploit

Hacked PS Vitas may have full homebrew support in the near future.

While Vita hackers have already managed to exploit a few security loopholes, allowing the handheld to run a limited selection of PSP homebrew, the hacking community hasn't yet figured out how to run unsigned code in "Vita mode." Yesterday, hacker Yifan Lu, a hobbyist developer and "reverse engineer-er" known for his Kindle Jailbreaks, claimed he's done exactly that.

If his claims are true, Lu has discovered an exploit that allows users to run unsigned code in Vita mode, one that doesn't rely on easily pulled PSP titles. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/116526-Rumor-Sony-Suspends-Two-PSP-Games-Over-Vita-Homebrew-Exploit] To take advantage of the exploit, which hasn't been detailed for obvious reasons, Lu is putting together a team to work on a project he's called Usermode Vita Loader. The project is still in its infancy, and it remains to be seen if Sony can patch the security exploit before it goes public.

While homebrew loaders don't allow users to run pirated games, not counting the usual selection of emulators, many developers, publishers and users see them as the first wave of a full blown pirate invasion. Lu claims to "hate piracy as much as any developer," and adds that it's physically impossible to run game backups using his exploit, but he also claims that he isn't responsible for how people use his programs.

The Vita is already having problems securing developer support, and reports of holes in the handheld's security, inevitable though they may be, will hardly make it more enticing. The most depressing thought is that if/when the Vita is hacked, all of Sony's anti-piracy posturing, from the proprietary, account-locked memory cards to the constant, often unannounced, firmware updates, will have been for nothing.

Ideally this would teach Sony to not fuck with their customer with all this useless DRM nonsense, but more likely it'll make em lump on more DRM and protective measures.

Sony's next big idea: buy a Sony product and get a Sony representative who you must feed and care for so they can ensure you're not violating Sony's product. Ubisoft and EA will soon defend it as the only way things can be done and hop on the bandwagon -- and we'll all be told how necessary the whole thing is.

That's not depressing, that's god damn satisfying. If anything it should be considered a hopeful event with the prospect that maybe Sony will realize their gauntlet of DRM measures is only serving to hurt their business.

draconian
People keep using that word for everything. It's come to the point where it's just another buzz word; without much meaning.

Also, for something to be draconian, it must be unusually severe. If everything's DRM is draconian, then it is no longer an outstanding occurrence and stops being draconian.

A good platform does not need to be hacked: android and the DS line for example

I have neither purchased a Vita nor a 3DS because at current, hacks don't exist to give me, the user, control of the device. Yes, that includes wanting to load 30 DS/DSi/3DS games on a single microSDHC, enjoy out-of-region titles, and fanmods such as "undubs", emulators, and other content along side my purchased content. My DSLite (and to a slightly lesser extent, PSP) gets plenty of use, including purchased game content, because "hacks" exist for them. Without those "hacks", it isn't worth it for me to purchase the hardware and thus, no chance I'll be spending anything on that system.

Why would anyone bother to hack this thing? Seriously even If I was a pirater, there still isn't anything I would want to play on it even for free. The PS vita has even less appeal to me than the Wii U which I'm all but ignoring.

This is a very important part of that article to me. I say kudos to whoever did it because it just goes to show that sony can shit all over their consumers with anti-consumer practices and it still amounts to nothing. Let the 20 following firmware updates in 10 days commence.

I don't understand. The DRM on a Vita game isn't the same DRM that is on a PC is it? I own a Vita and have never been inconvenienced by any of the sony DRM on it. On the pc I can understand, cause it limits a lot of things and is very roundabout.

But what the hell is the DRM on the vita? A serial code? It seems pointless to be complaining about DRM on a hand held console when I have never even noticed the DRM, let alone it being inconvenient.

The people going "It's hacked, now I have a reason to buy it" are just being childish. You're part of the problem.

This, I love my Vita, and I'm sad that there aren't more people giving it a chance.
