What Will You Do With "The Drunken Whaler?"

Bethesda is giving away sweet Dishonored loot to whoever can put together the best remix of "The Drunken Whaler."

"The Drunken Whaler" may not be the most original song ever, but the version that turned up in the E3 gameplay trailer for Dishonored was certainly creepy enough to be memorable. It was also creepy enough to be a bit of a chore to make; as Jason Menkes of Copilot Strategic Music & Sound explained [http://copilotmusic.com/dishonored/], not everyone was thrilled with the idea of having their young children singing about slit throats, rusty cleavers and hungry rats.

"In the end, we crafted a choir from child actors who could carry a tune, adult singers who impersonate young voices, and the children of our very understanding family and friends," he said..

For those of you who can't get enough of that child-like ode to horrific murder, Bethesda is now giving the song away in MP3 format. But that's not all! A remix contest is also underway, with fame, fortune and some free swag up for grabs. Just snag the "Drunken Whaler" stems from remix.dishonored.com [http://remix.dishonored.com], create your own track and then upload it to the site before 5 pm EST on September 28. The top ten entries will get a Dishonored t-shirt, a poster and a free copy of the game, and the big winner will also be featured in an interview that will be posted on the Bethesda Blog.

The contest is open to anyone 18 or older who resides in the U.S., the E.U., Australia or New Zealand, but apparently not Canada, which strikes me as a bit odd. But hey, even if you can't enter, free music is never bad - and this track is pretty good.

Dishonored [http://www.amazon.com/Dishonored-Xbox-360/dp/B005C2D2MO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347644279&sr=8-1&keywords=Dishonored] comes out October 9 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

This might actually be the funniest thing I've seen in awhile.

Maybe I'm just weird, but that song means something very different for me.

So there's probably gonna be a rap and a metal version of this by tomorrow.

Btw there are many more things to do with a drunken whaler:
sell his guts to the old fat butcher,
take over his bones for a midnight stroll,
drag him off into deepest shadows...

or just be nice and freeze time around him 'till he sobers up.

That link doesn't work and Bethesda.com has nothing to do with video games, it's a website for the place called Bethesda.

I think remix.dishonored.com [http://remix.dishonored.com] is the more appropriate place to submit your remixes... we don't want to make an enemy of the Maryland town of Bethesda by flooding their website with creepy music.

CRTC, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, are rather fussy, old blood government panel of cock blockers and hard offs that tend to cause a lot of problems for these kinds of international media promotions, especially entering the new, digital millennium.

Beyond government interference, there's also the labyrinthine mess of media and music unions and royalty enforcers. SOCAM and CMRRA up front, among others.

The CRTC existed with good intentions at one point in time, but their mandate has not changed to meet the progress of technology. Similarly, SOCAM and CMRRA do good things for Canadian musicians, but their involvement means that many more steps (and cost) for international promos, coupled with the low population compared to the US or UK means for corporate interests, it's often more trouble than it's worth.

Just shedding some light, for those curious.

I always thought that the song said "drunken sailor" <.<
The original does. They changed the lyrics for Dishonored since whale oil is used as fuel in-universe.

Uh nothing personal Mr. Chalk, but you may want to take another look at that link because it appears to go to the city of Bethesda, not the game publisher.

You are correct! Thanks for pointing that out and providing the proper link. Apparently I'm thinker than you drunk I are.

(The link has been fixed, btw.)

Well considering what people can do with My little Pony songs (seriously try looking up this day aria on youtube) this should be fairly interesting.

Ah, so that's why. Thanks for taking the time to explain it.

OT: Well that sucks, I was all getting ready to try my hand at a remix...until I read to the bottom. -.-

That song is awful. Can someone make a remix that makes it GOOD?
You can always listen to the original version, which is called Drunken Sailor and has been covered by as many Irish and folk bands as there are drinking games you can play with the song. My personal favourite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGyPuey-1Jw

Yes, I come from a fishing family and grew up on sea shanties. Even if I didn't, the references already made in this thread would be enough.

All right. In that case, kvetch away.
