GOG Holds "Pay What You Want" Sale on Interplay Games

You can now buy every Interplay game on GOG, including Fallout, Freespace and more, for 35 bucks.

If you've ever wondered why so many gamers of a certain age get a wistful, far-away look in their eyes whenever the Interplay name comes up, let me point you at GOG's latest, and possibly greatest, game sale. For the next two weeks, you can pay what you want for eight Interplay games, including Conquest of the New World, Jagged Alliance 2, Shattered Steel, M.A.X. and M.A.X. 2, or you can fork over a little more and get... well, everything.

If you pay more than the average price, currently sitting at a little over $11, you'll get 20 Interplay games, including everything in the pay-what-you-want bundle plus a dozen more, like Freespace and the Silent Threat expansion, Descent 3, Stonekeep, Messiah and Giants: Citizen Kabuto. Or you can fork over $34.99 and get 32 games, including all of the above plus Fallout 1, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics, Freespace 2, MDK 1 and 2 and Kingpin: Life of Crime.

Along with the games, the $34.99 bundle comes with 21 full soundtracks and 721 "goodies," including concept art, game manuals, wallpapers, "making of" videos and all the other bonus content included with each game. As usual, all games are DRM free, and if you happen to own a few of them already, you can gift your extra copies to your friends. I think that qualifies as a pretty solid deal.

GOG's pay-what-you-want deal on Interplay games is live now and will run for the next 14 days. If you want to get in on the action, head over to gog.com/interplay [http://www.gog.com/interplay].

Holy moly. If I didn't own most of these games already, I'd be in. Seems like a good deal to me.

Thankfully I already own most of the Interplay games I want otherwise gog.com would be getting more money from me this month.

Brilliant deal nonetheless.

why is it that whenever GoG says the words pay-what-you-want I just know they are going to make artificial price points? oh yeah because this happened http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120055-GOG-com-Introduces-Pay-What-You-Want-Divinity-Bundle meaning that they are still trying to understand what pay-what-you-want means. the say way a rapist tries to understand what consent means.

Oh my.

Out of those 32 games I actually played... lets see... 17 of them. This is one hell of a deal.

I'd be all over it if I didn't already own physical copies of half of them.

Did you honestly just compare a game bundle to rape? That goes straight past offensive and just ends up being hilarious. Thank you, I needed a good laugh today.

I had never heard someone say something bad about GOG before.

That person took it to like...the extreme?

Also I wonder if your name breaks quotes! Will find out soon! :D.

Are you seriously complaining because you can't buy ALL the Interplay games for a penny?
Is it weird that that annoys me more than someone who downloads them instead?

At least the downloader won't be costing GOG money in server fees :/.

I don't like the fact that you can't choose the games you pay for. Was going to get 20 games but I won't play a good chunk of what they give you for that. GoG failed in that respect.

GOG says, and I quote: "Pay what you want for Interplay games"

You can: pay what you want.
You get: at least 8 Interplay games.

There is no bait & switch, no hoodwinking, no scam, no problem here; just a good deal. You can pay what you want and get some games. -OR- you can pay more and get more games. There is still no reason to complain! If you don't want the games, don't buy the bundle!

Are you a fan of the Humble Bundle, sir? You can't choose your games there either. Can you point me in the direction of a 'pay what you want' bundle where you do get to choose your games? I've never heard of one and would love to be corrected.

Sure they make the old games easily playable on a new OS plus a few goodies, and the help to gaming culture is probably worth all the money that can be thrown at them.

But we should keep in mind that most of those games ought to be public domain (in a more ideal world, I'll give you that), and 0% of that money goes to the original creators (unless someone wants to correct me). At least the ones who can manage to make those games run by themselves and are not interested by the goodies shouldn't be looked down on like that.

PS: This isn't a morally grey area either, if our conversation didn't slip your mind completely... but whatever, right?

I've only ever heard of fallout 1 and 2 from that list... What other notable games are there in that list, and what genres? I dont want to pay $35 for just fallout 1 and 2 and I know nothing about the other games here...

On the PS, I would be lying if I didn't say most things slip my mind. Kinda comes with the territory after major brain trauma. And yet my memory appears better than most the folks on my Facebook feed.

But yes, I would agree that public domain should be the way of things. Given how old most of these are and how nobody involved with them is still getting revenue from them.

They keep using "pay what you want" sales, but I don't think it means what they think it means. Shame of it is I own quite a few of the games listed already, many on disc and bought at full price ages ago. Their more choice titles require a hurdle I'm not willing to jump over, so I'll see them again when they have a sale that isn't about trying to pass off games I already own or do not want in order to get to the good stuff.

Jagged Alliance is a pretty solid series, but really challenging (think X-Com, but in a jungle, and a lot deeper with some elements of Fallout... but don't expect Fallout), and the Freespace games are nice. I've yet to play Giants, but that was a big deal in it's day as well. The higher tier title set looks good.

MDK/2: were brilliant quirky 3rd person shooters with a decent sense of humour, (for the time) impressive graphics considering the large levels and was a game that brought sniper rifles/scopes into popular gaming.

Earthworm Jim: quirky (again) platformer, all about the tasty sprite graphics and sense of humour; I remember this being a fun game to play.

Descent: FPS in which you control a ship rather than a person, with six degrees of movement in a zero-G environment.

Kingpin: interesting mob-based FPS (if I remember rightly), with a Cypress Hill soundtrack. Got a lot of controversy for being released around the time of Columbine.

Messiah: odd third-person game where you control a little cherub, flying around and possessing people - kind of Prototype-esque in that regard.. or rather Prototype is kind of Messiah-esque in that regard.

Giants Citizen Kabuto: wikipedia says it's some sort of third-person shooter/RTS. I remember the name, never played it.

That's off the top of my head and the ones that ring the most bells for yesteryear.

Hey at least it rings a bell, I don't think your memory is that bad.

Eh?
Here's your correction. The indie fort bundle that Gamersgate recently held. I'll explain the format:

Bronze Package: 3 games for $3.99
Your pick out of 20 games.

Silver Package: 6 games for $6.99
STILL Your choice of the games out of 20 games.

Gold Package: 9 games for $9.99
10 games of your choice out of 20

Platinum Package :All games for $50

Each option contained the option to give extra directly to the developers.

Now I'm familiar with the Indie Bundle and the Humble Bundle, but those bundles are always under 10 games. And there's always a set price below average for at least 7 of them.

This is disappointing. Why should I HAVE to buy the full package of games in order to get the choice games that I want? That seems nonsensical. What If I just want 8 games. Why should I have to settle with games like VR Soccer and not get the choice of swapping that out for Die By the Sword?

Edit: I mean you have to admit, the more choice titles are in the $35+ range. The Gamersgate bundle was open and I was hoping that model would continue with a bundle that has 32 games. I'd like to get 20 of them but not being able to swap out titles like, "VR Soccer" and"Battle Chess" is annoying.

As a writer for the site, I assume you know most of the rules around here. Might I ask, is it possible to report someone for just saying stupid stuff? Because I think that gardian is a little over due for it. He complained about the same thing when gog did this model for the Divinity games a week or so back.
