NYCC: Tales of Xillia Panel

The Tales series gets a special installment for its 15th anniversary.

Not unlike Spinal Tap [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Is_Spinal_Tap], the Tales series is really big in Japan. If you don't count spinoffs, then we've seen only about half of its entries on this side of the Pacific. If you had asked the crowd at NYCC 2012 whether that's enough, of course, you would have gotten a resounding "no."An enthusiastic horde of fans showed up for a panel on Japanese game development where one of the guests was none other than Hideo Baba, the producer of the Tales series and one of the minds behind its latest installment, Tales of Xillia. In addition to sharing his thoughts on the game, Baba went into some detail about the challenges the Japanese development community faces and how it can evolve in the years to come.

One of the most recognizable features of the Tales series is its action-packed battle system, and Baba promised that its latest iteration would not disappoint. The basic structure of the battle system resembles Tales of Vesperia more than the recent Tales of Graces f, as characters can roam freely around a 3D battlefield while chaining basic attacks, which are free, and Artes, which cost magic points. The most notable change is in its "Linked Artes" system, in which two characters can combine their powers in order to maintain a fast and furious stream of attacks that can keep an enemy staggered. Another notable change is the ability to choose from two protagonists: Jude Mathis, a martial artist, and Milla Maxwell, an elemental mage.

The actual plots in the Tales games tend to follow a pretty predictable arc, so the series has instead relied on weighty themes and original characters to make compelling narratives. This time around, Tales of Xillia will revolve around the nature of belief, and how the quality of believing can affect a person either positively or negatively. Regarding the characters, Baba asserted that "The most challenging aspect is trying to create characters that are different from [the characters in previous games]." Baba has a point: Since Tales of Phantasia debuted on the Super Famicom, the series has had about 100 playable characters and party members. However, for the 15th anniversary of the Tales series, two of the most beloved series artists - Kōsuke Fujishima and Mutsumi Inomata - will team up for the first time to give each one a unique look.

Baba also had quite a few things to add about why Tales has been reluctant to embrace Western gaming conventions and where the series can go from here. "Our games have a unique sense of Japanese culture," he explained, maintaining that while Western developers have put out some remarkable games, none of their mechanics would feel at home in a series with so many Japanese tropes and references. When asked about the possibility of a multiplayer title (not counting the failed Tales of Eternia Online [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_of_Eternia_Online]), Baba replied, "We don't know if we'd be able to do multiplayer justice." Being able to create your own character, he argued, would diminish some of the story aspects that make JRPGs unique.

While Baba could not elaborate on whether some older Tales games might eventually make their way to Western shores, he did express interest in working on mobile titles in the future, especially with the proliferation of iOS and Android devices. "Rather than worrying about hardware, we try to focus on character and story," he said. Fans can see if he lives up to that ethos when Tales of Xillia launches in North America next year.

I should really get around to ordering this game, I love the Tales games but still haven't gotten around to playing this one yet.

When asked about the possibility of a multiplayer title (not counting the failed Tales of Eternia Online [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_of_Eternia_Online]), Baba replied, "We don't know if we'd be able to do multiplayer justice." Okay, this right here. Whoever asked that question can fuck right off. Tales has always been an amazing single player experience and if you don't like that you can take yourself elsewhere. There's not a single thing that multiplayer could add to these games, period. It would only detract from the quality of the overall experience.

At least Baba himself knows that and hopefully can prevent the CoD mentality from taking over the Tales series. Tales is one of the few JRPG franchises to stay true to its roots and continued to give a fantastic game installment after installment and that's always because of the gorgeous worlds and fantastic characters in them.

I don't want to have to deal with some shitty teenager on the other end of a mic calling the MC a fag during a cut scene or wiping my group because he got stuck playing the healer and wasn't pleased. And whenever a game includes multiplayer it usually tries to force it on you in some way if you want to see everything so I can guarantee you couldn't just avoid it.

Multiplayer isn't a bad thing but there are places it does not belong and Tales is one of those places. Not every game needs multiplayer, god damn!

Technically, didn't the Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology games have character creation? I thought I heard about twait wait wait wait. Who cares about that?!

Technically, it already has <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lz38e5-wXgs>local multiplayer, which is pretty fun. Actually, when the article mentioned the ability for characters to chain combo, my initial thought was "Oh, cool, now we can do that in single-player."

I do very much agree, though, online multiplayer would probably suck. I can get into a story with someone else playing in the room with me, but not with someone over the net.

Judging by that screenshot, I guess this isn't the special installment where the characters dress practically.

Still, Tales of Symphonia is one of my favorite games of all time, so I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this one.
Kinda surprising, that. Judy from Vesperia aside, the games I've played have actually been pretty good about that.

Quoted for truth, though. I love Symphonia. Still have to finish my second playthrough, though...

Haha, I was going to say the same thing, I hope someone turned around and punched whoever asked that question.

I've been waiting for this game for SO LONG! I thought the Tales developers gave up on the US market and just decided to go all Japanese!

Yes, it's another one where they dress stylishly.

Look for Mario. They dress in "practical" overalls with many pockets, perfect and comfortable for any situation! :D

Or maybe Super Jumpsuit Brothers! Join them in their never-ending adventure to find the most comfortable and "practical" clothing ever to grace the planet!

Main characters:

John Doe:

And

Jake Doe:

:p

Ah, now I'm reminded of how awesome their clothes are and how much I wish I had them. :|

Now I have to go have another "I wish our clothing industry made more clothes like that and less jeans and t-shirts" montage where I skip rocks in the lake and sigh a lot. :|

YES, ToX is hitting western shores! Makes me wonder if we'll get the currently in development Xillia 2 as well though. We got Dawn of the New World, Symphonia's sequel.

Wait, is this coming out in Europe? Oh, it doesn't matter. Yay for region free PS3's.

God I hope that the writing in Xillia is better than in Graces. That last one was abysmal. I don't even care if the story is any good, just give me good writing!

Oh for the love of Budda please don't embrace western gaming tropes. We get enough brown and grit in every other genre. Hell we've seen how poorly trying to westernize JRPGs already went with FF12 and 13

Eh, I know the game isn't considered vey good, I was merely using it as an example to reinforce the fact that we could also eventually get Xillia 2.

Another thought occurs though. Do you think we'll get any extra stuff thrown in the game for the Western release? Did Graces f have anything like that? I don't have it yet.

That's unfortunate, because DotNW is an awesome game and deserves to be mentioned and compared to in a positive manner.

OT: I'm kinda glad it's not using Grace's style combat. While it's an AMAZING (caps to offset silly hatred), action-packed combat system, I think it should be unique to that game.
Man, this is gonna be enjoyable to play next year. It'll be nice to have a main protagonist who isn't a swordsman, unless Jude pulls a Citan.

ok all jokeing aside they should have just used a different world and setting instead of trying to contenue symphonia, cause the combat and such while interesting were not what i was expecting. Oh and screwing up a story that bad should be a crime.
