Black Ops 2 Kills Regional Matchmaking

A new matchmaking system could mean a better connection with your brothers in arms.

There's nothing worse than playing an online game and experiencing lag between you and your fellow players. Past Call of Duty titles have relied in part on a regional matchmaking system that put a preference on grabbing teammates and opponents close to your location. Black Ops 2 will change that, relying exclusively on latency readings in the hopes of keeping lag to a minimum.

This means a couple of things; Firstly, your gameplay should, in theory, be as lag free as possible given that your connection to your fellow players is the only variable being considered when pairing you up. But it also means that your multiplayer matches could take place with people from different corners of the country, continent, or globe, so long as their connections are super speedy.

Of course, the further you are away from any given player in terms of physical location, the greater the chances that their ping will fall outside the acceptable range. In the end, you'll likely be playing the vast majority of your matches with those from your neck of the woods anyway. Though it remains to be seen just how well the new matchmaking system will perform when hit with the weight of millions of players.

Wow, this is like...what it should have been all along? Back in the day when we had a say so in the matter on PC, didn't you sort by ping and select the lowest number regardless of location? Oh well, this should work out better, and this game is looking more and more tempting, I tend to find the Treyarch ones take more chances lately.

Let's hope Microsoft has their servers ready for launch, when it goes on to break the sales record set by MW1 and beat by MW2, then Blops, then MW3...oy.

Not that I care, because this is, well... CoD... but I can't help thinking that this new system is going to mean that anyone without a stellar internet connection could suddenly find themselves unable to find ANY game.

I could be wrong but MW3 broke the day one sales, but not the overall sales if i'm not mistaken. I believe black ops is still the highest grossing of the series.

Of course this article is a bit old but it should still include MW3 with the date.

This means there won't be dedicated servers? -_-
On PC they already confirmed Ranked Dedicated Servers, this is just for consoles.

I have a better plan: use dedicated servers and allow rental servers. That way, people who are trying to play on toasters won't bother those who are not and you don't have to support servers when plenty of people have started supporting their own.

OH RIGHT. You want to sell people 15USD map packs for all eternity and want to keep people from private lobbies in case someone gets it into their head to make unsanctioned content. I forgot.

I was actually pondering getting this, but I have learned P2P is a waste of time.
Uh... It doesn't have free Rental Servers but Black Ops 2 on PC has both Dedicated servers and rental servers, the Dedicated servers are ranked too.

Or you could use this ancient technology called DEDICATED SERVERS!

Matchmaking sucks monkey balls. It will Always suck monkey balls. That is just how it is. Matchmaking is basically Gambling with which match you will connect to.

It will NEVER work properly and will always lose to dedicated servers.

That being said. Microsoft basically owns the Xbox's network so no chance of dedicated servers ever working on that console and Sony is to busy not making money to bother implementing this.

Guess I will go back to my PC to enjoy being able to pick and choose my servers.... sigh. The agony of being a PC gamer. So much choice.
