July Sales Up 22% According to NPD

The NPD Group, a toys and games market research company, has revealed $386 million in game sales for July, up 22% from this time last year.

Although predictions from most publishers have warned that the transition to the next-generation of consoles would reduce sales, NPD revealed today that sales for July are up 22% from last year. Current generation software sales declined to $45.5 million while the DS Lite and Xbox 360 game sales have remained brisk.

Software sales-to-date for are up 2% compared to 2005, which was a record breaking period with over $10.5 billion in sales.

Maybe (hopefully?) this can send a message to game publishers that us consumers are willing to buy games year round and not just between September and May. So many games get released during the typical holiday season and many get lost in the rush, so this type of news does suggest that there?s a demand year round video games in general.

There's been some pretty big releases put out this year, months ahead of the Holiday Rush. Oblivion? Chromehounds? New Super Mario Bros.? I'm not saying that the Holiday Season won't continue to be the giant sell-fest that it is, but I think some progress has been made.
