Captain Kirk Salutes the Desert Bus $1 Million Milestone

William Shatner stumbles upon the Desert Bus crew and watches them dance Gangnam Style.

The entertainment business is pretty small. It's not that strange to imagine Brad Pitt chatting up Tyler Perry, or MC Hammer appearing on stage with Psy. Even so, seeing one of science fiction's most recognizable personages shout out the Loading Ready Run crew as they play Desert Bus for Hope to raise money for charity is - for lack of a better word - awesome. Last night, William Shatner - Yes, the William Shatner, Captain Kirk on Star Trek - clicked on the Desert Bus website [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/content/DesertBusForHope] and liked what he saw, engaging with LRR as they passed the $1 million mark for total funds raised in the history of Desert Bus. Shatner even liked their "Gangnam Style".

The Twitter exchange began around 11pm ET last night when Shatner greeted the whole crowd:

Understandably, Graham, Paul, Kathleen and company were all very excited and replied with an enthusiastic "Hello! [https://twitter.com/DesertBus/status/270758306308562944]" Shatner pulled a classic and asked "How you doing?" before Desert Bus thought they spilled the news that they had just passed the $1 million mark. TO everyone's surprise, Shatner admitted to watching their antics for some time.

Of course, that meant he had seen the huge crowd of Canadians dance to Psy's "Gangnam Style" with the requisite dance moves, which caused a few blushes. Shatner took it all in.

The man who played Captain Kirk - and does a pretty fantastic reading of Elton John's "Rocketman" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvQwXOCKNLY] - ended the conversation at 1am ET with an incredible endorsement of everything Desert Bus:

Desert Bus is still going strong, with at least three more days until they finally stop playing the dang game. Head over to Yahtzee and MovieBob will be calling in this evening [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/content/DesertBusForHope].

Kick butt. I didn't know Shatner was watching at a point.
This publicity will only do more good for Desert Bus. More money for the children.

Whale Plaid Mr. Shatner.

I was the one that pointed it out! They didn't believe me at first (which is rather understandable considering) but I loved how happy that it made them.

Now back to more Desert Bus! But before I go I shall share this video from last night that has gone reasonably viral.

What I find hilarious is that William Shatner is just like us, roaming the internet and stumbling onto cool stuff and sometimes strange things.

I don't know. I guess I always thought celebrities were usually out doing celebrity things instead of slumming it up with us on the internets.

What would be interesting to find out, is if Shatner was member of the Escapist without any of us knowing it.

I for one long ago would never have known about Loading Ready Run and Desert Bus, if it wasn't for me frequenting the Escapist.

There are few things as glee-inducing as when Graham gets loopy and can't stop laughing.

Oh I remember the "QWOPing balls" from Graham last year. My god, how much I laughed.

Graham loopy live is just fantastic. I love Desert Bus.

This is true, though I did find it hilarious to see the usually stoic Cam QWOPing balls over poop jokes just a little while ago.

OT: I actually saw all this happen on Twitter (and while watching Desert Bus, obviously). There are few moments that rival hearing Skeletor singing Total Eclipse of the Heart while Shatner tweets to Desert Bus. That was just so fantastic. I am incredibly happy I've been able to watch Desert Bus finally this year. It has been good.
