DayZ Release May Slip to 2013

Technical difficulties and engine issues may force the delay of Rocket Hall's zombie standalone.

"We will not compromise the [DayZ] project for the short-term gain of meeting this [release] date," says Dean 'Rocket' Hall in the latest developer report for his zombie standalone. The development team still wants to get the foundation release out by end of year 2012, [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/119848-DayZ-Standalone-Will-Hit-Retail-by-Years-End] but that's looking much less likely now.

"The reasons for any slippage would be publicly discussed," said Hall, "and would most likely represent a failure personally on my part to plan correctly." Among the issues complicating release are major architectural changes - Hall describes them as "very bold" - in the switch to a server-side MMO model. Effectively, DayZ is so completely altering the Arma 2 engine it used to run on, that the zombie game is pretty much using a different build altogether.

"While the graphics may look the same (for now)," Hall said, "under the hood so much is being completely rewritten."

Hall also mentioned the imprisonment of his friends Ivan Buchta and Martin Pezlar [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120853-Imprisoned-Arma-3-Devs-Express-Optimism-in-New-Letter], who would have been working on DayZ were it not for their Greek espionage charges. Their forced departure from the project meant that Hall had to bring in someone else to finish map design for ChernarusPlus.

"Screenshots, videos, etc... will unfortunately have to wait," Hall concluded. "As they say, loose lips sink ships."

I expected that this would happen.
Now we find out if Rokkit was right about DayZ needing to be released before 2013.

We don't exactly need another zombie game this year, 2013 will be fine by me if it means a better product.

Awe was hoping I could play it over winter break. Oh well, rather them come out with a good product than a crappy rushed one.

Very glad. DayZ (the mod) looks absolutely dreadful in terms of AI and animations, so an overhaul seems like good idea to me.

And of course, hopefully it will be much less buggy.

Yes. luckily I got over 350 hours out of my DayZ so I might try actual ArmA II when DayZ standalone is released.

Look at it this way: Now when people look at your games list and see that, they'll think you're a totally hardcore gamer who lives for the realism.

Yeah, to Mr. Hall and the Day Z dev team (like they read this): Take your time with it. Make it awesome. Make it a game you guys love, and that'll show.

What you've done is awesome already. At this point you're making a good thing great, and giving it a polish.

But the WarZ folk messed up not for an incomplete product, but for misrepresenting what it was and the state it was in. And then being completely unapologetic for blaming everyone else. We've forgiven much more when it comes to products that were released prematurely, especially when the devs and publishers were very sporting about it.

We're still with you guys. Keep at it.
