Microsoft Offers Free Xbox Live Gold for Cloud Save Issues

Microsoft is compensating those who had issues with its cloud saving system.

Xbox Live's cloud features underwent a bit of a rough patch in the past few weeks, leading to reports of inaccessible game saves for many users. According to the company, the issue has been ironed out, and to help ease some of the pain of a tough month of gaming, a free one-month extension of Xbox Live Gold is being offered to those who were affected.

"We want to thank all of our Xbox LIVE members impacted by the Cloud Saved Games service issue for your patience and understanding," notes Alex Garden, General Manager of Xbox Live. "It took longer than we expected to get back to full performance as we needed to ensure the integrity of everyone's game saves. Whether you couldn't access your game saves for a couple of hours or a couple of days, we sincerely apologize for the delay and inconvenience. We will be automatically applying a one-month extension to the Xbox LIVE Gold memberships of everyone who was impacted. We can assure you we'll also be doing a thorough post mortem to help prevent this from happening again."

Microsoft's Larry Hyrb, aka Major Nelson, reports that users won't need to contact Microsoft or file any type of request in order to be compensated for the downtime. Apparently the company already has a full list of those whose saved games were briefly unavailable and will be distributing the free bonuses on its own.

One month is kind of not enough, it should be at least 3 months. Their service didnt worked properly and because of that some people lost their data, its their responsability and because of that I dont see how something that is equivelent to 5$ is enough to let their costumers happy

that's it Microsoft, 1 months free service for a service which everyone else manages to do for free anyway.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Wait, why does the 360 even need cloud saves? Don't most users just play from a single console?

I'd guess it was a late reaction from the rrod

Xbox 360 has an easily removable/swappable Hard drive, anyone affected by RRoD should be able to transfer/recover their saves just fine. To me it seems more a issue with the 4GB Hard Drive on the newer systems; not enough place to store their saves, so here's some extra space.

When they offer free Xbox live permanently, then I will care and might actually get their system. Until then, no thanks!

You know, in this case, they could learn a thing or two from Sony. Sure, Sony getting hacked is a bigger deal than this but they at least gave away THREE free months of PS+ and two free games of your choice. No one cared if the games were good or bad; it was free and it worked.

So hey, at least offer three free months or free arcade points or one free game or something bigger. One month is not enough.

Nintendo does it for free.

Nintendo, they who not know what be "online." They manage to provide a service for playing games over the internet for FREE. ...and nevermind that Xbox LIVE is, indeed, a quality service (as you'd damn well hope for $60 a year). When Nintendo has caught up to you on that front, that's when you know you need to rethink your priorities. Nintendo, of all companies.

Valve...? You mean PC in general, right? Microsoft owns Windows. OHSHI-

...no, yeah, I'm saying, Nintendo - who has flailed behind on online gaming for a whole generation now - has finally implemented free, good online services, which means Microsoft no longer has any excuse.

What's the point of cloud saves on home consoles?
PCs get formatted so it makes sense for steam or origin or whatever but consoles?

I have no freaking idea why. I think MS wants a steady flow of income coming in case they fail at Windows. It's something likely, due to Windows 8 pissing off many people.

None what so ever. PSN+ offers this as a convenience along with free games, so of course MS is going to jump on the bandwagon! However, this is MS, whose greed can be seen in many places (okay, it's three, but they all count).

OT- Yo, Microsoft. If Steam on PC and PSN have more functionality for free, I guess you guys should reconsider the price for Xbox Live. You know what I can get for 60 USD? More than 15 games on Steam and Dark Souls and Persona 4 Arena for PS3.

MS isn't doing free x-box live because they were first to offer a service like it on consoles, if Sony released the PS3 first they would have had payed online, same with Nintendo. Despite there being online gaming for consoles like the PS2 and GC, Microsoft popularized it.
