Persona 3 Film Gets Release Window

A classic JRPG will get the silver screen treatment in 2013.

If you're a big Persona fan, you may already know that Japanese production house Aniplex has a film adaptation of Persona 3 planned, with a tantalizing trailer to boot. So far, information about the film has crept in at a petty pace, and Persona 3's release window is the latest juicy tidbit. The adaptation will release in Japan sometime in 2013, with no North American release on the horizon just yet.

The film's official website [http://www.p3m.jp/] revealed the release window on New Year's Day, simply stating: "Persona 3 The Movie #1, in theaters 2013." The movie will be out sometime before the end of the year (probably later rather than sooner), but the site also reveals that it will see a theatrical release, at least in its native Japan. Furthermore, the "#1" indicates that it will take multiple films to retell the entire Persona 3 story, but further films will likely depend upon the success of the first.

Fans in Europe and the Americas needn't despair just yet. Even though there's no official word about bringing the project West, just about every entry of the Persona series has made its way to Western audiences in one form or another. In other words, there's probably no reason to summon a demon from the depths of your psyche and wreak havoc at your local high school - for the time being, anyway.

This better be successful enough for them to get the whole story told and a world release, or some die hard fans may try to summon their personas in real life.

You do have to wonder why they went for the movie series option rather than anime TV series but oh well. It'll be interesting to see how they'll depict the story compared to the game.

On a completely unrelated yet related note, anyone else have a bad feeling?

Hmm... I just started playing Persona 3 for the first time last week, so I've barely started; hopefully this turns out well.

They've already done a Persona anime series, they called it Trinity Soul
Wasn't the actual persona 3 story though- it was a 'sequel' featuring only one of the original main characters and has been declared non-canon by Atlus because it did some stupid stuff with the lore.

OT: Kinda excited for this. Loved the game, and its story.

I don't know how this will work though. I personally know what my Persona 3 main character thinks, what his motivations are, and what he values etc. etc, and I believe that other people who played the game have a similar image of what THEIR character was like. I can't see the film working with the "same" main character (and since he is in the trailer i assume he is in it) since at least to me it will be offputting if the MC acts in any other way than my MC does.

Think if they made a Mass Effect film, in which Shepard was the main character. Everyone has their own Shepard, and they would be miffed by the film pushing a canon Shepard on them.

And since the people who played the game will probably be the core audience of this film... I don't know.

I really hope they dub it and bring it to theaters. I know I have my hopes up about the theater part, but that would be awesome.

Also, maybe they have different versions of the film for the male and female perspectives of th tale.

They did release a manga version of Persona 3 and gave the main character a name and a personality, albeit a rather bland one.

I know this'll never happen, but I would be oh-so-very happy if this makes its way into theatres here in the US.

I'm wondering how they'll 'deal' with social links, and elizabeth/igor/velvet room, really. I'm not sure where to split the first two, but if you break the second into third after the Hanged Man and aftermath, that'd be a fine ending and final act, as well as having the 'darkest moment' at the end of the middle film of the trilogy.

I think it might work better as movie than an anime adaptation. The story feels a bit more "Chunkier" (best term I can figure for it) at least compared to P4 (which did get a very nice adaption.) that it fits better for a set of 90 minute runs. Not much happens for most of the time between full moons. Aside from whatever side fluff you're doing otherwise it's just the team sitting on the couch say "We should go to out and level tonight" (with a few rather major points along the way) So it fits well to have the whole "Deal with full moons shadows, team building, Big reveals at the end. Deal with Strega come to term with all major dilemma for story characters. Deal with Nyx final wrap up type deal" sorta pacing for the movies.

The one issue I can see overall as that the side fluff (some of the best parts) might go MIA along the way.. which would be rather sad. The anime had the time to pace out a few episodes to cover all the social links that weren't story based. (typically wrapping out a few of them at once as part of some other story tieing them all together as a major story run for the episode) The movie covering them might seem a bit of an oddity less they take a few for each movie and play them out during the non shadow hunting day bits in between story plot stuff. (be interested to see how they plan of playing out the Hermit social link just for curiosities sake alone on that.)

That's my best thoughts on it for the most part.
