Hackers Gank The War Z

DDOS attacks have been playing havoc with The War Z's servers.

The War Z's train wreck [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/121200-Hammerpoint-Admits-Mistakes-in-The-War-Z-Debacle] has been complicated by hackers, who have taken it upon themselves to kill the zombie apocalypse game's servers with DDOS attacks. Though the developer has taken steps to solve some of the server problems, not all of its fixes work, and Hammerpoint Interactive has turned to Steam to help it in its hour of need.

The War Z community manager Kewk first alerted gamers to the problem with a forum post: "over the last few days we have been under attack by various forms of malicious attempts to shut down our servers." Then a series of fixes were attempted, some of which were successful, but not all. Steam users in particular were affected, and Hammerpoint's best efforts proved fruitless. "We have no alternative to seek help directly from Steam and have requested this from them," Kewk said. "Unfortunately, they may not get back to us until tomorrow in the afternoon ... I apologize, Steam users."

As you may recall, Steam users upset at how The War Z's launch had been mishandled had the option of requesting a refund [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/121189-How-to-Get-Your-War-Z-Refund-From-Steam], and the game is no longer available for sale on Steam. However those who had already bought it on Steam were free to continue playing, if they wished.

Of course, that assumes that the servers are still available. No word yet as to when this zombie game will crawl out of its most recent grave.

Given their high level of integrity I would not be surprised if it turned out they are having an ISP/Server issue and are just shifting the blame to a nebulous "DDOS attack"

I would actually buy this explanation if I didn't know how vindictive people on the internet can be. I can absolutely see /b/ or some other group deciding to play vigilante here.

I don't see why hackers are jabbing at the thing with redhot pokers, I mean is it really necessary? It would be as if they'd come across a man sitting in a recently-dug hole, slowly burying himself, then just for the hell of it, they unload a truckload of gravel right onto his exposed bits. It's neither sporting nor appropriate, regardless of what Hammerpoint had done. It's not like they maliciously robbed people of their money. Refunds were offered and anyone who felt like they'd been cheated could get their money back and go on their merry ways.

If you listen closely you can hear the only 2 users sobbing softly.

I'd buy that.

Yeah, what Hammerpoint did was dickish, but they went back to set things right didn't they? Seems kind of unnecessary at this point.

Only when their hand was forced by a tidal wave of negative publicity. They have pretty much burnt all their bridges, they are just going to have to ride this one out unfortunately

Not that I agree with DDoSing anyone even these clowns but in a way they only started to set things right only once they could no longer censor/permaban people from the steam forums. These days trying to stop someone from raging on the interweb is like trying to put toothpaste perfectly back in the tube, nigh impossible.

It wasn't really Hammerpoint that set things right, it was Steam. Hammerpoint responded to requests of a refund with the threat of "blacklisting" people, claims of false advertising with threats and bans, all while systematically banning people who played the game too much or too little, and so on.

Sometimes people deserve to be kicked when they're down. This is one of those times.

Hammerpoint will look up and shout "Save us!"... and Steam will look down and whisper "No."

if they had any sense about them, at least. Fool us once, shame on you, fool us twice shame on us. They lied and bullied the Steam users right from the get go. I understand compassion, but they really wanted to cheat their way into sales. They got what was coming to them.

Chalk me up to believing this conspiracy. Considering how I would trust the War Z developers as far as I could throw them I view everything they say to be a lie.

Seriously, that's all I got from this. They'll work even slower because of the added depression and high blood pressure from the DDOS attacks on a game that has nothing to do with them.

"We said we believe it may be hackers, It turned out to be our own incompetence and lack of hosting but when we did a list of things that could cause a server to go down, hackers was on it and we thought for a half second it may be hackers. We cannot be held accountable if the facts did not match up to what we believed" or as I call it religious games marketing.

Couldn't it be both?

Steam/Valve handled refunds. Hammerpoint have handled douchebaggery and contempt for their customers. So no, I wouldn't exactly say that the devs "set things right" though you are probably correct about DDOS attacks being unnecessary at this point.

Oh, they're very much unnecessary, but that's the Internet for ya. Anyone with enough knowledge to DDOS a server can improvise himself into some sort of cyberspace vigilante.

Yeah, I can easily some disgruntled gamer decided to punish the developers by DDoS attack on them. Expending extra energy on punishing something that made you mad rather then letting it go? Sounds like the internet to me!

I'm of two minds. One is, I think the developer of this game deserves to go down for their horribly misleading release and predatory micro-transaction system. The other one is: This is affecting people who like the game, so it should stop now and these hackers should all be beaten thoroughly.

I have to say, one of my favourite things about the Escapist news room is their knack of getting the most hilarious photos to accompany each story. Well played.

On topic I don't have any sympathy to spare for them, partially because of their actions to get to this point and partially because there is a small part of me that does think they wouldn't be beneath screwing up their own servers, blaming it on hackers, declaring the game unsalvagable, taking the money and running.
